This is the budget that Murray keeps referring to. He can spend money, but he has to keep in mind that the core of his roster will be getting significant raises in the next year or two and it's more important to his system to have three guys making $3M than one guy making $9M. It's the small market mentality...
IMO Murray has to address two top-six positions, and a top-four D position without hurting the core or taking on too much salary in the process.
First, Alfie made more than $1M last year. He also had the buy out money. Second, we're talking cap hit, not salary, and his cap hit was close to $5M.
Edit: I think the buyout actually ended last season. Still, the cap hit was $4.875M or something like that.
