Wiercioch had a decent 1st year, you can bet money him and his agent want a 1-way.

As for Condra, yeah I agree, although he may be asking for more than a 4th liner typically gets.

He had a good 30 somethings games, yah... and that big playoff shift. Anything outside of a 1 way at close to league min... maybe around 750 or so, he's asking for way too much. He earned the right to be in the NHL and nothing more.

If you're Condra, you just point to Smith's contract I'd say. For Wiercioch, it must be the 1-way thing that's the hang up for sure.

yeah I agree.  Wiercioch did better than I expected, he still needs to get bigger and play better in his own end.  he should get a 1-way for 1-2 years and see if he can take the next step.

I can't imagine Murray lowballing him with a 2-way, he's shown he can play in the NHL. He has nothing more to prove in Bingo.

It must be the money or the term that's holding things up.

To be honest, who else do we have who is going to take Wiercioch's N7 spot anyway?

Borowiecki.

Just saw on twitter that in 08-09, Goligoski scored 22pts in 48 games and got a 3-year $1.8 extension. That might be what his agent is using as a comparable.

Doesn't matter, you don't over pay a guy who doesn't deserve it. Condra has been around long enough that has earned his keep in the playoffs, he's a guy that has proven his value to the team. 4 years at a mil (or around) per... that's fair for him, very fair.

He's not a #7. Let's not be silly here. Give him Gonchar's PP minutes and see what happens.

He may have more talent than a N7, but he was the 7th guy during the playoffs and that's basically where it's at as far as negotiations go.

Seriously though he's not above Phillips on the depth right now and there are other guys you can look at in the organization and fill that role. Personally, I would rather have Benoit out on the ice most of the time over Wiercioch... that's telling if anyone else shares that opinion.

I live Benoit and you can basically play him in any situation. Either way, Wiercioch is an asset whether you sign him or not and a valuable one at that. I can't look at a guy who had one less point than Dan Boyle and think otherwise.

I think he's a guy that has a ton of potential and is showing flashes of it... it would be moronic to not sign him short of using him to move up in the draft but right now at the NHL level he is a 6, 7 D man because he hasn't shown the ability to be able to play in any type of game and in any situation. I said this a while ago, Wiercioch is a guy that will probably hit his peak in his early 30's.... super long term project.

Good thing we're in a rebuild.

They're trying to build a core that will be competitive for years to come. We used to spend to the cap and we were a first round exit at best.

Spending lots of money didn't accomplish anything for Pegula and the Sabres. In fact they are now blowing it all up.

Yeah, I get all that. Thanks.

At some point some money will need to be spent. I happen to think that time is now. Not the cap, obviously, but a couple of pieces is not an unreasonable expectation.

I imagine money will be spent to keep whom Murray and co. deem essential.  Karlsson and Turris were already locked up to long-term extensions.

The free agent market sucks.  Murray will most likely make a shrewd trade or two.  He got us Methot last year for a 3rd line player.

If they can get Bobby Ryan, Taylor Hall or another top end player then do it.  But I don't want some middling overpaid signing preventing us from resigning Cowen, Zib, Silfverberg etc. down the road.

Go big or go home, there seems to be little more than a bunch of overpaid, overrated players and cap dumps on the market.  I think they're just following what LA and Chicago did, make the big moves when the opportunity presents itself and when the rest of the pieces are in place.
