Does he play for his team mates and the love of the game or does he play because he wants to be the best ever... you get the same vibe from him as you did with Lemieux and there are A LOT of people that did not like Mario and still don't.
How do you get that vibe though? Crosby has no ego and just goes about his business quietly. He is pretty similar in his captaincy as Alfredsson IMO.
He plays to win, he plays for the passion of the game...
I would say he goes about it privately which is a little different. There is a difference between playing to win (which they all do) and being totally obsessed with it and it getting to the point where that's all that matters. The only other guy who I can really think off that was like that was Pat Roy... he's a goalie which does make a difference, solo position. Mix that in with Lemieux (the biggest baby to ever play) as his mentor and the guy always in his ear and you have the formula for an absolute a$$hole. A guy who is totally obsessed and will whine and cry when things don't go the way he wants them to. He's an Island to himself in that room and on that team, he trains, practices, and plays... don't care what you do in life but if work is all you think about you basically have no friends and no life.
IMO Crosby is a guy that is just an extremely shallow human being with nothing on his mind but hockey. Yah, he's the best player on the planet but that's not the only thing that matters. Truth be told, I don't think he even enjoys playing the game anymore. This is all judgement on my part and I could be 100% wrong but that's how I see it and I know others in the media and NHL see it in a similar light.
I do think you are wrong and being speculatory in this case (especially him being on an such island, which is 100% false, and there is actual in-the-room media evidence that denies this), but I won't argue your points much further. Crosby is the exact same as a guy like Jonathan Toews, but because he is 150% better, he will get the hate and the criticism.
To say the guy is shallow and has no life and no friends is silly when you just said he's a private person. If he's a private person, which he is and which is a good thing, we don't know what he does outside of the rink. Just because he isn't seen shirtless in a limo with broads doesn't mean he is focusing on hockey 24/7 even in the off-season. Jaromir Jagr probably works harder than Crosby, so I guess he has no life either?
Calling 100% BS on that because it isn't true. Toews is much, much more personable and comes off much less shallow (if at all) than Crosby.
Crosby is shallow, completely shallow. He has done nothing and experienced nothing other than hockey for the past 2 decades of his life. His life is hockey and yes, that makes him shallow. I'm past the point in my life where I have the goods on anyone that isn't around my age (28-32) anymore but I know as well as a lot of others do, how sheltered Crosby's life has been. I'm not saying Crosby has to be out going, loud, or even have some sort of personality on the ice or through the media, but the guy doesn't have a clue what's going on outside of a gym or an arena.
All in all, I have never seen a player like Crosby in my life, not Gretzky, not Lemieux, not Jagr, Toews, or Chara. He reminds me more of a Chinese Olympic athlete than a Canadian hockey player... life has been dictated and controlled since he was old enough to walk.
