Karlsson was at half speed, Spezza has shown in the past he can be a PPG player (he will never be a heavy hitter, even though he gave some nice hits this year and took a whopper to make play, bounced right back); Cowen just wasn't anywhere close to game shape and still recovering -- I'd give him a mulligan this year. Pageau certainly stepped up; Silfverberg and Zibanejad were not ready but it's their first season in the N/A game, Play off Edition -- two more mulligans.
We still need the game breaker who can turn on the jets, fight through the holding and hitting and get to the net. Or two. And a RHS D-man.
Those guys are hard to fine. Briere fits the bill though.
Some of those may be in our lineup (or in Bingo's) already. Ceci is a RHD D-Man who (given some time and proper coaching) can develop into that 2nd pairing guy who's good defensively and creates offense. Let's face it, as much as we were surprised with Gryba's progress, he is likely better suited to the 3rd pairing/PK role.
Silfverberg has shown that game-breaking ability in the SEL and it may only be a matter of time before he figures out the NHL game. Don't forget that his rookie season was the marked with Spezza's back surgery, Karlsson's Achilles, Anderson's high-ankle sprain and Michalek's knee problems. Silfverberg was supposed to either be riding shotgun with the 4th leading scorer in the NHL, or being eased into the top six slowly. Instead they were playing 2-1 or 3-2 games for most of a compressed season.
All that said, getting Briere (for nothing) would be great.
