With Dallas' additions of Gonchar and the extension of Lehtonen, Dallas is at their usual place of signing big name players and not being able to afford them come mid-season. I'd imagine you could pry Benn out of Dallas for our 1st, Noesen (from Texas), and Greening/Silfverberg. May seem like we're giving up a lot but Benn is a beast - easy 40 goal scorer playing with Spezza.

Benn is a beast - so why exactly is Dallas dealing him?

He's untouchable.

and that deal is lacking in actual NHL players

Franchise player in DAL, no question. Great sentiment, but it's about as probable as OTT trading Karlsson.

EDIT: this new text box is stupid.

As for Letang, no, I'm not messing with anyone.  It's much smarter, cheaper, and logical to groom Ceci a couple years in the AHL to fill the role of the #3, 4 guy behind Karlsson.  Easier mins, can work 2nd pp unit, etc.  Letang is going to come in and demand more than Karlsson and demand top line mins as a RH shot on the 1st PP unit.  The fit isn't there and a lot of the production that comes from him is a product of the players around him.  Karlsson is the player that others around him feed off of.

Whoever lands Letang if he is indeed traded will be in for a surprise.

Where's the Letang trade speculation coming from? He's the type of guy you build around, not trade when his contract comes up.

I heard about this on the radio citing credible media sources that cover the Penguins. I forget the names. Letang could be gone in a matter of a couple of days.

I'd never heard of Ruth's Chris until today when I read the name here and also in a poem (about an hour after reading it here) that I'm considering using in class next year. Weird.

Look at their Capgeek page: http://www.capgeek.com/penguins/

Something's gotta give. They have $3M to sign 3+ players this summer, and then in 14/15 they have 6 players making $38M.

It's more TSN insiders speculating just based on what happened with Jordan Staal last season. They will offer Letang lots of money and if he rejects their deal, then they're not going to wait to trade him since he only has one year left on his deal.

I agree with Prags, take many players out of Pitts and watch their production drop. even Gonchar who even though he aged had a severe drop in output leaving pitts. Malkin and Crosby make everyone around them better. it's just a fact. you cannot expect letang to put similar numbers just like i don't think Dupuis will have as much success elsewhere either.

Nah. Letang is an offensive dynamo. The second best puck mover in the league behind Karlsson, many would argue he's as good or even better. He's pretty tough for a little guy, he's decent devensively. This is an amazing hockey player, but if you have him and Karlsson as 1A and 1B, you're gonna be absolutely unstoppable IMO - especially with Cowen and Methot flanking them.

Letang in Ottawa is as big a step forward towards a Cup I think we can take. We're just so tough to play against with that kind of fire power on the blue line - and more importantly puck possession. They'd make our forwards so much better - it would be ridiculous.

They can't both play on the top pairing, so Letang will get 20-22 minutes. He's not going to put up same numbers playing 6-8 minutes less and not on the 1st PP unit. And while you say he is a tough little guy his injuries recently don't really support that. He's not the crease-clearing type, either, so you need him to score points, but not as a 2nd pairing guy.
