Also, Cullen is a guy that can come in, not disturb the lineup or the room, fit in on any of the top 3 lines, can play center, and produced consistently at about 1/2 PPG every single year. He's the ideal player you want to bring in for some support and I would think he wouldn't cost a ton to bring over either.

He's burried in Minny right now so his stats this season IMO are not accurate in terms of what he does every single year. Very smart player that can work the PK, PP, and bring balance and some experience to a very young lineup. Good player to have with kids right now because the stress might get to them.

There is such thing as too much youth and the Sens are bordering on it if they haven't gone past that ratio already.

He's lost a big step though. I've seen a few Minny games and haven't been impressed, plus he's old as the hills and will continue to digress. Plus, he chose NOT to sign with us, but to sign with Minny. I wouldn't touch him at this point personally, that ship has sailed.

Yeah, I'd probably do Seto for Greening, but how do you possibly sour of Greening in 10 games? He's playing on the 3rd line with Z.Smith who is also struggling and Neil who has limited offense. He's worth every penny of his contract, works harder than anyone in the gym, loves to hit guys, has a track record of scoring and playing well, come on....

I'd hope you'd do Seto for Greening in a second. That's like saying, "I'd probably do Crosby for Michalek." Laugh1

EDIT: Granted, I'm exaggerating. All I meant was that, one for one, you make that move every day of the week. Seto has scored 30+ in the NHL. His average is more in the 20s, but he's basically a better version of Greening (at least at this stage).

He's lost a step? Or he didn't have training camp and he's 36 years old. I've seen him play as well and he's not so far gone he wouldn't be an upgrade for a couple of years over Greening.

IMO the perfect fit right now on a short term basis. Also, he didn't leave because he wanted to, he left because Murray couldn't give him 3.5 per. Cullen is a better player than Greening and I can't even believe this might be debated.

Like I said, bringing a guy like Cullen in gives the team options. He's the type of player that can play with anyone and any position on the ice. He's a center, he's a LW, he's a RW. He's a guy that will come in and do what's asked and play his game which translates very well to the Senators system.

This is a player that was the best Senator in a playoff series only 2 seasons ago against the Pens. He, like Alfi can get by on his hockey sense alone.

Taking a guy with a cup ring, who's been around for a decade, and can help the youth develop and take pressure off them is a good pick up at the right cost. Also a guy that would resign for sure with a decent season in Ottawa if he ever got here... he wouldn't go back to Minny, that's for sure.

I'm not really trying to defend Greening to the point where I wouldn't trade him, but I like him a lot and view him and Z.Smith as integral parts of our team's 3rd line going forward. I don't like Setoguchi and really never have. He's your typical player who when he's not scoring sucks very badly. If you want to compare I'd say Setoguchi is a Michalek lite. When he isn't scoring - which is a lot of the time - he's useless, 100% useless. Do you want another uber streaky guy on the team? At least when Greening isn't scoring he's still useful - which shouldn't even be a debate IMO.

What's the price? I can get on board knowing that he's a pending UFA, but I'd be wary taking on a 3.5 million 36 year old who appears to have lost a huge step - lockout or not. If we're talking a 3rd rounder + a low level prospect, great. If not, it's too much.

Greening is not a fixture in any way. He's a nice player who may have had his career year in his rookie year. It's not like it's a 21 year old kid who is only going to get better, he's 27 and is what he is.

Smith you can make the argument for, he's younger, will go with anyone, has a scoring touch, and can do the things needed to win if asked.

Setoguchi probably isn't the answer in Ottawa, they have Silfverberg, Zibanejad, Da Costa, Turris, and Spezza, along with Alfi who are all RH shots and work the PP... they don't have a LH shot aside from Michalek who knows how to do everything from being a key cog on the PP and the PK. Cullen is that guy if they want to pay a minimal price for a guy that makes sense now and a few years down the road.

Would do it straight up for Greening, no question.

Not sure I'd do that. I think there are other avenues to explore before we trade our hardest working player who scored 17 in his rookie year as a big bodied presence with Spezza. You want to talk about a Dustin Penner style player, that's Greening, but with speed to boot.

Greening plays absolutely nothing like Penner. Greening has very little hockey sense when compared to most players let alone a guy who has had extremely successful years in the past along with 2 cup rings with 2 different franchises.

I dunno about that. Penner was very astute at getting to the right place at the right time and scoring, but now his 'hockey sense' is completely gone, or he can't keep up with the play, or he's just done because he aint doing it.

Seriously not sure which player is more valuable right now between him and Greening. At least Greening has speed.

So does Clara Hughes.

Greening has speed in the skills competition but he doesn't actually have a ton of speed on the ice. He takes forever to get going. Never seen a guy win fastest skater and look so slow in a real game.

He goes from point A to point B to point C when he's out there and he works hard to do it. The best players find a way to get to point A to point C. That's how I explain Greening when he is out on the ice.

He works hard, not smart, last year was the best year he will ever have IMO.

meh, all this talk of trades and it's not impressing me at all. a 36 year old Cullen? an unproductive setoguchi that can't seem to get it going anymore? hey, what's cheechoo doing these days? seriously, Murray said a while back that he would make trades that kept us young and moving forwards in the long run. both those are not doing that.

as always If BM is talking to Minny then I think it's not about these two players.
if it is then we've officially pressed the Panic Button.
