This makes no sense to me. Don't most players seem to turn the volume up in a contract year? I've never heard of someone not trying to avoid getting injured because their contract is coming up.
But he's playing for a team that does not have him in their long-term plans. His existing body of work is what the GMs will look at much more than the first half of this season. Assuming he gets moved at or before the trade deadline, he then has plenty of time to show his new employer what he is worth.
Does that make more sense now?
