If there's one built into the contract, I don't know that they'd have to honour it.

I don't think Nashville is as cheap as they used to be but I have my doubts that they can financially match those early bonuses. I'm gonna say they will see him off and go into re-tool mode. They unfortunately missed their chances at the cup.

Sure looks that way.

They have to match the contract as is, I believe. Otherwise they aren't really matching it, are they?

I would bet money that contract term length gets capped in this next CBA. Otherwise, you might as well continue to let the alcoholics hold the keys to the liquor cabinet.

I see offer sheets as having some analogies with arbitration. You are forced to either match or not -- the contract is forced on you. With mediation it can be either 1 or 2 years. Although I don't see them changing the max contract length (the GMs control this one anyway), they may want to push for limiting RFA offer sheet terms.

And he still counts towards Philly's cap, I bet they would love to remove that. If only there was a team shy of the cap floor that they could move him to, and just to be fair they should include a pick or prospect, or maybe some roster player that could be top 6 material but is down on their depth charts.

Can you even trade a player on the IR? Or is it that you can't waive him?

I bet Nashville sends some of the draft picks back to Philly in a pre-arranged trade so they don't have to pay Weber insane $$ but they get something back other than draft picks, it's happened before.

When has it happened?

Holmgren to NHLPA in CBA discussions: "These contracts are out of control! The spending is crazy. We need to get our costs down. It's crazy!!!!!!"

He then leans over to Weber's agent and whispers: "14 years, $110M, obscenely front loaded and bonus laden."

Weber's agent then nods his head and the deal is struck.

Holmgren returns his focus to the NHLPA: "Ahhhhhhh..... nevermind."

Weber wouldn't have had any say in the structure. That would be tampering, no?

EDIT: I take it back. The fact that he signed it makes it clear that he either wants out or wants a massive (and absurd) contract.

He was also in Philadelphia being courted so to speak, getting a tour of the city and arena.

Can't see why not really. If a team's medical staff says it's a go, then why not? It's like asking if you can trade a player who is retiring for a year.

It's not really even an option, I doubt anyone wants any part of that deal. Sens won't pay for a guy not playing, and Pronger won't want to come to Edmonton 2.0.

There would be no point to restricting offer sheets, so long as they abide by the rules.

If a team can only offer 1-2 years, they risk giving up a lot of assets for a rental.

Chris Gratton in 97 is one that i read about. They wouldn't actually be trading weber for anything, instead the preds could trade to philly some or all of philly's picks for players/prospects.

I've heard of players signing deals and the original teams not paying and so losing the player, but I'm pretty sure the original team can't turn around and trade a player after he's signed an offer sheet. The contract is binding, and the process is, I think, not override-able -- the only thing left to be sorted out is who is going to be paying the stipulated salary, NSH or PHI. NSH would have to wait a year to move Weber, if they match.

The options are very limited here, either Preds match and they take on the contract or they don't match and Philly gets their man and pays the compensation. The contract has been signed. He's getting that contract no matter what - either with Philly or with the Preds. Preds can't re-negotiate the contract or counter anything once the offer sheet has been signed by Weber.

The only twist could be if the NHL rejects the contract. Not sure what would happen there.

Dreger had some interesting info today:

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/darren_dreger/?id=401000

"General manager David Poile and the Predators were given a heads up that Weber would be signing an offer sheet and were given the chance to make a trade before the process was completed. Several other NHL teams made a pitch for the First Team All-Star, but the stakes proved too high."

Fascinating.

Poile wanted Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn in a trade. I guess Philly said FU, we'll offer sheet the crap out of him then.

Done. Couturier and Schenn for Weber? Done a thousand times over if I'm Holmgren. Then Weber's mine...all mine.

I think you're misunderstanding, Dr. Poo. No one is suggesting that Nashville trades Weber. The idea is that Nashville doesn't match and takes the picks, then trades a pick (or multiple picks) back to Philly for a different piece. That's basically what happened with the Gratton O/S. TB wouldn't match (the offer was pretty silly for a player of that caliber) and they ended up trading both FRPs back to Philly for other players.
