Another factor may too be Suter. Would he have re-signed knowing that his partner was there long term? Or did Suter look at Nashville's failure to sign Weber as a red flag? Arbitration is never an option that helps foster a good relationship.

Maybe being a cheapskate isn't the best course of action if you want to build a team and hold on to your core.

Could he have, or was this Weber's plan all along?
Weber wants to get paid. He's now going to get paid by one of two teams. For Philly, it's a low risk, high reward move.

It's no risk. Like I heard on the radio today, it's like calling up Kate Upton and asking for a date. If she says no, oh well, no harm in asking, but.....

Now that I see this breakdown, I am hesitant to say it's automatic that Nashville matches. That's a ton of upfront money. Dunno about Nashville's budget. The compensation isn't enough though, particularly if they are getting 4 20-30ish picks. They are basically starting over in Nashville, save for Rinne. Oh and Mr. Underwood.

Mike Fisher is a UFA after next year... I'm sure he'll re-up without issue. He's married to Nashville. Wink

The front loading makes is very hard to trade him after a few years... spend a LOT of money early on and then trade... much like Drew Brees' contract in New Orleans. Huge $$$ up front.

Yeah, you gotta be willing to pay. Nashville did. They could have walked away from the arbitration ruling. They were willing to pay Weber 7.5 and by all reports were close to what Minny offered Suter.

They aren't necessarily cheap, but they probably aren't a cap team. These days, cheap is a relative term, considering that the cap floor is now higher than the ceiling was coming out of the lockout.

I guess cheapskate is a relative term when you're talking about "only" a couple of million.

Actually, it's smart imo.

Pay him huge money upfront while he's having his best years, and once he starts to leave his prime, he's got a lower salary. Front loading it is fine now, since I think they'll get their money's worth for the first few years, when 2/3 of the contract is paid out. I think once those signing bonuses are over, he becomes a real valuable trade chip at around 31-32.

Touche.

I guess I am a huge cheapo then. I spazzed at the bank because the exchange rate cost me an extra 1% the other day to buy some Australian dollars.

A statement from the Preds will be issued today, according to Dreger.

I reckon they are going to match, otherwise they'd be thinking a lot harder.

Either that or they are going to whine about how these contracts are killing the league, blah blah blah.

Maybe Craig Leopold has a spare box of tissues his old team.

He wipes with C-Notes.

Statement was issued... Basically said, "We got the offer sheet and we're looking at it. See you in 7 days..."

I'd take the 7 days too, that is 7 less days the Flyers have knowing what is going to happen, and if they lose out, they lose 7 days thinking about what plans B or C are.

Also, if Weber wanted out, he'd only accept a deal taking him just to UFA with Nashville. Since he's only RFA, his options were hope another team submits an offer sheet or that Nashville trades him. By signing the offer sheet knowing Nashville could very well match, he locks himself into a 14-year contract with Nashville. Sure, Nashville can trade him in one year, but if he has a NMC/NTC that becomes a very difficult situation (Heatley/Nash).

Wait....tell me he doesn't have a NTC/NMC if Nashville matches. There's no way...

shabbs wrote:That offer sheet has been structured to make it as difficult as possible for the Preds to match. Weber must really want out. Does Poile really want to keep him around then? Gonna create some friction. Getcha popcorn ready.

Weber wouldn't have had any say in the structure. That would be tampering, no?

EDIT: I take it back. The fact that he signed it makes it clear that he either wants out or wants a massive (and absurd) contract.

If there's one built into the contract, I don't know that they'd have to honour it.

I don't think Nashville is as cheap as they used to be but I have my doubts that they can financially match those early bonuses. I'm gonna say they will see him off and go into re-tool mode. They unfortunately missed their chances at the cup.

Sure looks that way.
