What's really remarkable is how very little money separates, say, OTT from NYR or BOS.

True enough.

How realistic is that table, though? It doesn't take into consideration cost-of-living. Dallas, for example (like the other top-three, I suppose) has not personal income tax (state) but they make up for it in residential taxes and sales taxes. New Hampshire has no sales taxes (I know NH has no hockey team). Ideally you live in a state with no state income taxes, in a modest house to reduce your residential taxes, close to the border of a state with no sales taxes to do all your shopping.

Plus the table figures don't take into account income deferral plans, tax shelters and other opportunities available to those with a minimum salary approaching a half million.

Frankly, I was a little surprised the difference would be so little for Parise between NJ and Montreal.

Now, throw in a row for the KHL for comparison.

this should be the last footnote to this story:

http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/07/03/could-nashs-list-expand

Owner Eugene Melnyk told the Sun in an exclusive e-mail Tuesday night he has no issue with spending money, however, he only wants players who want to play in Ottawa.

GM Bryan Murray confirmed Sunday he has cut off talks with the Jackets because Ottawa isn’t on Nash’s original list, but there was speculation Tuesday that could change if Columbus GM Scott Howson doesn’t deal him by mid-July.

Nash can pretty much rule out the Senators because Melnyk, without naming names, said he isn’t going to bring players to Ottawa who don’t want to be here.

“Yes, we want to make our team better — always — but never with a player unless we are on the ‘A’ list,” Melnyk wrote late Tuesday. “I believe, and I think our fans would echo this, it is a privilege to play in Ottawa.

“You want more money? A bigger car or house? Lots of other teams will spend like idiots. We are a true TEAM with REAL special and smart fans. I don’t care who you are, you have to WANT to play in Ottawa. That’s what defines us.”

The Columbus Post-Dispatch reported nobody had gone further in trade discussions with the Jackets than the Senators. Sources say the club offered winger Nick Foligno, prospect Mika Zibanejad and goaltender Robin Lehner.

Sources also told the Sun the Jackets wanted top prospect Mark Stone as part of the package. The Senators weren’t prepared to do that.

The discussions went sideways last weekend because Nash told the Jackets he is steadfast in his refusal to come here. Sources say he’d like to be dealt to the Sharks or Rangers. He may consider Toronto.

So now he mayyyyyy waive if Howson doesn't deal him by mid_July ?

Fingers FU

I must say, that's one of the very few times that I've loved what Melnyk has said. Bang on, every single part of it.

Yeah I forgot to add that's the smartest thing Euge said in a long time regarding the Sens.

Could also be a little mind games, and it might mean that Nash may change his mind to come to Ottawa, but the price Ottawa is willing to play may have just come down.

Also, Sens think Stone > Zibanejad.

That's what stuck out the most for me.

Tim Murray had already stated that they wouldn't beg Nash to come to Ottawa. The organization's attitude is if you don't want to play in Ottawa, Diddle you. I think fans feel the same way.

Nobody is begging anymore. The owner just stated they aren't going to ask. But if Nash asks, it is different.

If Nash asks the answer is Fingers

No, the answer should be, sure, but now we are only prepared to give you __, ___, and ___ instead of Foligno, Zibanejad and Lehner

I think what that meant was that they didn't want to include Stone on top of Zibanejad and Lehner. That was my understanding.

Nash had a chance to waive his NMC for Ottawa, he said no.

Melnyk said Fingers

Our offer is off the table (especially since we traded Foligno anyway). If changes his mind later and adds Ottawa to his list, we are not interested anymore.

We don't players who do not want to be here (Nash).

Why does Melnyk and Murray even care? If they want a big fish, go and land Ryan. Am I wrong? What's the difference? I'd say Ryan's just as gifted a goal scorer.

After Heatley, Melnyk isn't paying for overpaid prima donnas like Nash who do not want to be here.

If Nash only wants to come to Ottawa because the alternative is staying in Columbus, well then forget about it.

As for Ryan, he seems to want to go to Philly, I think he'd walk after his 3 years are up.
