I've heard that Gonchar was being shopped and Philly was interested. Probably just some random tweeter that was retweeted by someone I follow. But it could happen -- move Gonchar to open up space for a right-handed defenseman, possibly clearing space for a top-six forward UFA (Semin?).

On Semin, there is a rumour that he has an offer of 2 x $4.5, but he's looking for more than that (and will get that from the KHL).

If Ottawa trades Gonchar to PHI, that would be awfully nice of them to try and help Philly win a cup.

Gonchar might not be a favourite player here, or even an option if we had the pick of any player in the league, but he's all the Sens got right now after Karlsson.

Only way I can see that is if Ceci makes the team. Even then, Gonchar > Ceci by a huge margin.

And adding Semin at the cost of Gonchar makes the team better how?

Seems ever since we got Gonchar there's been rumours we're going to trade him ...

Or if we're trading for Yandle or Boyle. Naughty

Or that.

Even though he is older, I think Boyle should be the guy, if anyone, they try to get. Right handed is probably the most important thing, since the Sens D will only have one. But Gonchar is a lefty, so you lose an OFD with a LH shot, but have two OFD's with RH shots.

Boyle also would retire a Senator, while Yandle might pack up and leave after his contract expires. Losing Boyle in a few years allows the Sens to bring in a younger player on their terms.

Yandle's a leftie, we already have 3.

Boyle would make more sense but I can't imagine what we'd have to give up for him, and I can't see Gonchar waiving his NMC before it expires.

Well, what if it is a swap of Gonchar for Boyle? Gonchar with 1yr left @ $5.5M vs. Boyle with 2 yrs left @ $6.66M. Saves SJ $1.1M in cap this year, and $6.6M next year. Opens things up for them now and next year to add (Nash?).

Ha, saw a rumour on twitter that if the Rangers are successful in acquiring Nash, in which the deal includes Ryan McDonagh, that they will also acquire Yandle. Ok, cool plan... how do they manage to successfully trade for two of the biggest available players when one alone would cost more than most teams are willing to give up?

The move makes total sense on paper, I just can't see it happening. We'd have to be out of the playoffs next year (when Gonchar's NMC expires) as well I'd imagine.

As for Nash, he doesn't want to come here, I think that ship has sailed (never left port actually).

No, not us and Nash - San Jose and Nash.

And why do we have to be out of the playoffs to swap one veteran OFD for another? It's almost a win-win for both teams. Only problem is Boyle > Gonchar, IMO, so the Sens would probably have to add to make SJ accept it. The move is all about addressing needs - the Sens need a RH d-man, and Boyle is that. Plus he has expressed an interest in returning to Ottawa.

Rumours are they also want Weber. Now how in the hell can they get all of those players under a 70M salary cap?

We'd have to add though, not sure what.

So losing Gonchar would put the Sens close to 10M under the cap floor. Gonchar also has a NTC.. would he waive it to go to Philly?

The only way I want the Sens to take on Semin is a 1 yr contract and no longer. There is so much out there that he is not well liked by his teammates. Putting someone like that in the Sens 'room' may disrupt the good chemistry they have.

If they move Gonchar.. then I would turn to Calgary to get Bowmeester.

I think Dan Boyle is out of the question now - he seems pretty excited that Larry Robinson is now in SJ.

Cheapskate Melnyk is hoping the floor goes down. He won't be in a hurry to get to the current floor. I think Radek Martinek and Cam Barker are available in Gene's price range...
