But it could happen -- move Gonchar to open up space for a right-handed defenseman, possibly clearing space for a top-six forward UFA (Semin?).

On Semin, there is a rumour that he has an offer of 2 x $4.5, but he's looking for more than that (and will get that from the KHL).

So losing Gonchar would put the Sens close to 10M under the cap floor. Gonchar also has a NTC.. would he waive it to go to Philly?

The only way I want the Sens to take on Semin is a 1 yr contract and no longer. There is so much out there that he is not well liked by his teammates. Putting someone like that in the Sens 'room' may disrupt the good chemistry they have.

If they move Gonchar.. then I would turn to Calgary to get Bowmeester.

I think Dan Boyle is out of the question now - he seems pretty excited that Larry Robinson is now in SJ.

Cheapskate Melnyk is hoping the floor goes down. He won't be in a hurry to get to the current floor. I think Radek Martinek and Cam Barker are available in Gene's price range...

What's wrong with staying near the floor ? There is no good FA out there now that Suter/Parise are gone.

We could sign some middling free agents with NTCs but then we'd be treading into Leafs/Flames category.

I don't think we need a polarizing, french-canadian hater like Doan here Laugh1 besides he'd be suspended for part of the year.

He's a dirty player, I have no idea why people love him so much and want to sign him to a 35+ contract, the dude's too old.

I'm not against being fiscal, but not at the cost of improving. If there's a chance to improve, I'd hope they would do all they can to do it.

I think Semin would be an upgrade to our top 6, I hope the Sens are considering it.

But I think the D is set - too many 1-way guys now (well, 5 + Cowen) - two of them were just brought in (Methot and Lundin).

Seems right now the way that the Sens re building is trading one player for another, then replacing the player they traded with a FA. They needed a defenceman, instead of signing one, they traded for one, then signed Latendresse to replace Foligno.

So that said, I COULD see them trading Gonchar for Boyle, for example. Or maybe they trade him for a forward, then sign Barker as someone mentioned.

Barker is awful, what a bust, why would anyone want the Filatov of defencemen ??? He probably won't even get an NHL contract this year, when you're so bad even the Oilers don't want you on D you know you suck.

One man's "awful" is another man's (The Gene) "bargain." Beer

Yeah, it would probably be a guy who has played 60 games out of a possible 244 the past 3 seasons that they sign.

Gonchar might not be a favourite player here, or even an option if we had the pick of any player in the league, but he's all the Sens got right now after Karlsson.

Only way I can see that is if Ceci makes the team. Even then, Gonchar > Ceci by a huge margin.

And adding Semin at the cost of Gonchar makes the team better how?

By adding *another* defenseman to play the right side, but who actually shoots right and can play the PK.

Or if we're trading for Yandle or Boyle. 2012/13 Lineup - Page 36 620247

Boyle was the one I was thinking of a little while back, but there was no room for him (not a third pairing guy). If Gonchar is moved then we have room for O Danny Boyle.

Losing Gonchar but replacing him with Boyle is OK. Also sending a couple more contracts to San Jose would be fine, too, as we are over 50 if we want to sign our RFAs. And we'd be doing SJ a favor in terms of cap flexibility.

So, Gonchar + Daugavins + Butler for Boyle.

Can you cite where you heard/saw that?

Could we see this in the lineup?

That's 5-year-old Cody Ceci and his sister meeting Alfie. Of course if Alfie sees this picture that might push him into retirement.

I think Gonchar is here for this year unless we're out of it at the trade deadline. It all meshes with what I assume Murray has in mind for next season with Ceci coming in and Gonchar coming off the books.

The nervousness with Gonchar is that he's due for a tremendous injury - especially at his age and he's also really tailed off on the PP. He's actually pretty good 5 on 5 and on the PK, but he's no longer a PP QB even for the 2nd unit. I'm not sure if Mac will use him on PP1 with Karlsson, or put him on PP2 with someone like Lundin.

How is he good on the PK? We had a *terrible* PK with a very good goalie. And on this team he had the 4th highest SH-TOI (both total and per-game). Cowen (a rookie) had 3:08 while Gonchar had 1:49. That *is* saying something. Also we had *zero* right-hand shots in the top four PK defensemen. Carkner was 6th on the team in SH-TOI per game and 7th overall. No wonder our PK sucked.
