Yeah... this seem odd. To confirm a concussion and be possible to play so soon... does that seem right?

Or is this all some more mind Cussing by MacLean?

yeah you'd think he'd be out till symptoms subsides. you don't want him killing himself either.

Probably to keep the Rangers guessing. Team 1200 speculated this morning they might appeal if Alfie plays. Of course this was before it was confirmed that Shanahan will not reduce the suspension.

They have until the start of the game to appeal.

Shanafool needs to punish the hit and not the outcome. He says in that article that the concussion is what cost Hagelin 3 games. He "doesn't think (Alfredsson) is faking" either, it seems. That wouldn't even be a consideration if you simply punished the hit.

It's the Information Superhighway. This thing moves fast.

If Alfie is out because of this, I want a Sens player to crush a NYR head -- Richards, Gaborik, or Callahan. Alfie for Hagelin is not even close to a fair trade off.

The NHL needs a better mechanism to deal with this stuff in the playoffs. It's too easy to send a goon or lesser player after a star in an attempt to hurt him. Teams will keep doing this stuff as long as it's clear that it provides them with an advantage, which it clearly does. Sure, take the offending player out -- but if the victim is taken out because of the dirty play, then slap the team with a substantial fine, make that fine count against next year's cap, and make them sit a player of roughly equal value for the duration of the victim's injury.

Make the consequences of the action matter, and you will see a reduction in this nonsense.

Mendes: Alfredsson has passed his baseline concussion test according to MacLean.

This is why he is possible to play tonight.

Baseline test for Alfie: Is he breathing? Yes? OK. Cleared.

I understand the logic behind your proposal (eye for an eye), but it will never be implemented.

Also, the players' union would have big issues with it. They don't want the cap being f'd with, and they don't want more people being suspended. I think the thing that would make the biggest difference is bigger fines. Yeah, suspend a guy for a few games, but ALSO be able to fine him beyond the salary he will lose. For instance, a guy sits 5 games, loses $50,000 in salary, but ALSO can be fined a matching amount to the salary lost (i.e. an additional $50k).

Of course, the players union would never accept that either...so longer suspensions seems to be the only available penalty.

And the problem is with the eye for an eye mentality of revenge, the retaliation is always worse than the initial offence, and then the other team will retaliate, and so on.

I also don't encourage any form of it - by all means hit and be hit, just keep it clean and legal.

Brown's hit last night was awesome! The announcers were whining that it was late - but fact is, it wasn't penalized. Sucks for Sedin that he left momentarily, but hits is hockey. Throwing hits and getting hit are going to hurt. You're going to get hurt blocking shots - doesn't mean that you should attack the other player who shot it at you.

Also - I thought that if a player was diagnosed with a concussion they had to miss so many games automatically?

Just need to pass a baseline test. If you can go you can go.

I think if you fail the baseline test you need to be out for a minimum number of days before you take it again.

Regardless, it is Alfie and he knows his time is running out so I don't think he will let anything stop what could very well be his last playoffs.
