Undoubtedly both teams are playing politics on this one in order to protect their players. My thought is that along with suspensions, both teams may be getting fined and St. Louis, San Jose, Philly, and Pittsburgh might also be getting fines for what has gone on over the last 24 hours. The league has a PR disaster on its hands and they need to look like they are doing something.

Mind you if their officiating and punishments followed their own rulebooks and guidelines, we probably wouldn't be having these issues.

Surprised that this was announced first. His hearing was after Carkner's. To quote various Star Wars characters: "I've got a bad feeling about this."

It's so wildly inconsistent, it's laughable. If they can figure out how to be consistent, they'll solve a lot of these problems.

John Shannon: Phillips on Callahan was reviewed. NHL felt hit was a full body hit with subsequent head contact. It was not a targeted head shot.

Hagelin's not as important to the Rangers team as Alfie is to the Sens. Luckily Alfie is not as important as he was 2 years ago, but if Alfie is out 3 games then it's still not close to an even exchange. Not that there was any expectation on my part.

I can't help but feel that Shanahan still owes us so much more, with Alfie missing, what, 10 games on the Wolski hit, and Winchester missing a half season. And I have to be honest, I don't think Carkner deserved anything more than what he had already received. Boyle didn't miss a shift and even scored a goal in the game. It's not like Carkner picked on a guy with thick glasses sitting in a wheelchair -- the guy is 6'7" and 244 lbs, and he picked on Karlsson -- one of the rising stars in this league -- in the previous game.

The worst part about Alfie missing any time is that we'll see Butler back in the lineup.

Butler will come in on the 4th line and get some PP time. He can be effective on the PP. It's not like the PP will get any worse.

That's exactly why it would make little sense to put Butler in. Too soft. I get that he might bring more offence than the other two (Daugavins/Klinkhammer) but Ottawa's goals have been gritty and fluke goals. So Butler's not going to do much in that manner. You need Klinkhammer to crash the net.

Although, my official guess is that Alfie plays tomorrow. It sure sounds like he will.

I said it on Twitter, and I'll say it here...if Boyle got the only penalty when he gave Karlsson about 7 jabs to the face, all of the craziness would have been avoided. The NHL has no one to blame but themselves and the refs for letting things get more and more violent. Boyle should've manned up and dropped the gloves with Carkner, but I understand why he didn't...I wouldn't drop the gloves with Carkner either. Either way, message sent.
