MacLean would play someone on their off-side and get Lee in. I can't imagine the off-side thing coming into play here in this specific instance.

The "off-side thing" is the single most important factor in ice hockey and likely all of sports at the amateur, international and professional levels.

Fact.

MacLean says Lee is likely to replace Kuba. Murray fired MacLean after he said that, as, obviously, it is impossible to play your off-side as a defenceman. Idiot.

Haha, did Mac say that Lee is likely to replace Kuba?

Yes.

There we go then, problem solved immediately. It'll still hurt a lot, but it's manageable.

How long will he be out is the next question...

And if it doesn't want to go in the net he can beat the snot out of it.

For sure Neil will help that a lot, but I'm not sure why we wilt like that. Things will change in the coming year(s), but for now that's something I've noticed as well.

I'm sure that's inexperience but that seems to be the scouting report that's out on the Sens. Forecheck the defense hard to expose them and prevent them from moving the puck out of the zone. Our defensive strategy is pretty much move the puck out ASAP. It's pretty easy to box us as in as our defence tend to panic and cough up the puck under pressure.

Team really focus on EK as he's dangerous if he can build up speed out of the zone (few forecheckers can catch him by then). Rundblad is the worst, he wilts if he's pressured in our zone.

Big Ev wrote:and I don't understand how people still think the Butler shot was a goal. Did you not hear the defining PING? There's no other way it makes that sound other than hitting dead on and coming back out.

As far as I know all of the metal parts are made of the same metal, so that "ping" can be from the post, crossbar, the strut at the back of the goal or the back of the net up-top. The bottom curved part is padded but the rest are not. That actually could be a very simple change to implement -- make sure only the outside parts are metal, and everything inside is padded. That way if it pings it's out and if it thumps it's in.

Da lil Guy wrote:With the exception of Phillips, I really thought that our defence wilted a little under the forecheck. Showed some inexperience. Cowen was a -3 and I thought Rundblad was really exposed.

Doesn't help that Kuba was injured and we were shorthanded on D, of course.

I questioned that pairing when it was first announced. Two rookies. Cowen wasn't very good at protecting the puck against the aggressive forecheck. He is a big guy, he should have been able to impose his will but, instead, he was bumped off the puck fairly easily and it resulted in a goal.

2 goals, means a shooting percentage of 20% which is very good. Michalek has 20% as well. Guess who leads the team? Konopka with 28.6%, which partially explains why he was a big scorer in the OHL ( ice time and opportunities to shoot).

In response to some of the above comments, which are purposely trying to misrepresent what I've been saying:

1) the Dman's "handedness" doesn't matter -- what matters is what side of the ice he is comfortable on & where he has traditionally played. It's true that the two usually pair up, but not always. Gonchar is a lefty but he plays the right side of the ice traditionally, for instance, but he is a bit of an exception to the rule rather than a typical figure.

2) there's a HUGE difference between having a guy play his offside for a few shifts or games, rather than building your team in the off-season so that you will know you will always have to play a guy on his offside. The former instance happens all the time -- in the middle of a game because of a penalty or a shift change issue or what have you. If Kuba's out for a few games, no biggie. Pairings will get shuffled, our guys who play the left side (Phillips & Cowen) will play a little more, and guys will definitely on occasion play their offside. That's short-term stuff, & you make do. What is categorically STUPID is thinking that a GM is going to build his team in the offseason so that he's going to have 5 guys who traditionally play one side of the ice and 2 guys who traditionally play the other. Any GM worth his salt is going to have at least 3 guys who can play each side, and then go from there. That's why the "Trade Kuba to make room for Rundblad" idea floated around here all summer was so stupid.

If Kuba were out for the season or a long stretch (say, 2-3 months), tho', I'd bet good money that we'd be in the process of making some move to shore up our left side, either through trade or call up. A few shifts or games, you make do. If the hole is long term, tho', any GM who is doing his job is going to try his best to fill it.

So, what you're saying is that a defenceman who is left handed can't use those corkscrews that are made for righties? That's racist.
