It's not that I was expecting or not expecting a playoff spot. I never really have any expectations going into a season, and it was pretty clear we'd battle it out for 8th.

Regardless of expectations, it's ALWAYS disappointing to miss the playoffs, and it's ALWAYS thrilling to make the playoffs. If we end up getting in the playoffs this year, the only team we don't want to face is Pittsburgh…we could realistically beat any of the other teams, especially if Matrix gets in a groove.

I just want them to play well enough to shut the guys at THN up for good

Picking us to finish last wasn't really that ludicrous at the time. It's about time we get over our rage at THN (except for that Ken Campbell waste-of-flesh...that guy can burn in hell).

Can't quickly find the original thread where Murray's comments on Sid/Foligno were brought up, so I'll just post it here. Here's the transcript of what he said (courtesy of SensChirp):
"The rules are very clear now. If you fall into a goaltender, you touch a goaltender, an elbow to the head, butt-end to the head is fair, it's okay. Dan Bylsma said that is okay for them, Sidney said Nick Foligno is that kind of player. I am not sure, I wish he was that kind of player. But, I thought the referees in that game, watching and hearing the comments...it was two and two. He got cross-checked four times, he fell over the goaltender there is no question. Did he get pushed? I don't know that. But he got cross-checked when he was on the ice, he got I thought looked like a butt-end but probably a full-time elbow. He punched back, Kunitz came in with a cross-check and the penalties were even at the end of the incident."

"So if Shanahan says that is a good play, that's a hockey play, Dan Bylsma says that's good for them. Pittsburgh were the biggest ones on the head injuries I thought early on, so...I am remiss, I made a mistake. We didn't have Neil and Carkner play in the game, we didn't have enough toughness. So when we play Pittsburgh, I guess, that's something you can bring up to me again before we play them next time."

They picked us last because we are 'rebuilding' and none of the players we are 'rebuilding' with are known quantities so they played it safe and picked us last. No one touched upon the fact that some of our biggest problems from last year (goaltending and coaching were resolved). It's not that they picked us last but why they picked us last.

And it's not just THN, Ottawa gets very little credit(where credit is due) in the mainstream hockey media. Everytime the TSN panel discusses the Sens it's hilarious to see the look of disbelief on their faces that this team is anywhere near .500. We were supposed to their butt of jokes this year.

Did he mention anything about it being open season on Ottawa players as long as Deputy Douchebag is in charge of discipline?

There were many people who figured we'd be a lottery team this year, and probably a few from this very forum. There were many unknowns going into this year, and there are still many unknowns. I don't think we should have rage towards anyone that picked us to finish near the bottom, and aren't WE a little surprised by the team's moderate amount of success so far this year? And we're still on the outside of the playoffs, so it's not like we can discount the negative attitudes towards this team prior to the start of the season.

Who picked Washington and T-Bay to struggle? Washington was one of the favourites for the Cup!

There's too many variables in play to predict how an NHL season will play out...that's why no one gets most of it right, most of the time.

Some of that was wishful thinking from prospect groupies on this very forum.

Oh sure there were unknowns, lots of unknowns.

But we got very little benefit of the doubt. Last year we lost Alfie, Spezza, our 2 goalies collapsed physically and mentally and the team would rather sleep in the city dump than play for Clouston. Maybe we weren't as bad as last year indicated ? Look at our play post-Anderson trade for an hint of what this team could do.

I am a little surprised by their success so far but I never thought we'd be dead-last joke of the East this year either.

One of the analysts (I think THN) chewed us out for not going out and blowing millions in free agency.

This became a better team the second Fishlander was dealt.

Fact.

We're so much better with Nick "JJ" Foligno as our #2C and official team weatherman.

At this point, it might be less about the 2C position and more about the 3rd line. Kelly was a great player obviously, but Z.Smith has been every bit as good as Kelly was - which is very lucky so far. Add to that the tremendous play of Condra taking over for Ruutu and you have a very smart, hard working duo. Add Daugavins to the mix and you have a ferocious, young line 3 that had time to form chemistry in Bingo before coming up to the NHL.

Plus, Winchester has really embraced his role on this team. Now...we need some work on the 2nd line, but that will come.
