Should Ottawa be concerned that the Islanders may sign Barry Brust to an NHL contract?

Why not sign him for the rest of the year then, just to protect your property?
Thanks for that... I was more curious on the player and their salary, whether it be 35+ or not... normally retirement means the player leaving money on the table for what's remaining in the contract right? But if you're forced to retire due to an injury, yet don't file papers etc... I assume the player will still get paid? Or does contract insurance kick-in and pay the player no matter what?CockRoche wrote:shabbs wrote:Yeah, not sure of the details around a career-ending injury... care to wade through the CBA? I'm sure Roche can provide some insight.wprager wrote:I can't see how the 35 year rule would come into play if the guy lost an eye. There's got to be some medical exemptions.shabbs wrote:Yeah, I think that makes sense... insurance would cover it, cap would come off the books as it's not a 35+ contract.wprager wrote:If he's forced to retire, though, he still gets the money, doesn't he? If a guy loses an eye and can no-longer play he still gets the rest of the contract he's on -- I think insurance will pay his salary and I'm guessing his cap hit is off the books.
If I am following the conversation correctly, we have switched from talking about Savard to a player with an 35+ contract that suffers a career ending injury?
Any player who signs a contract when they are 35 or over will always be on the Clubs cap whether he is healthy, injured or retired; there is no way around it. But if the player doesn't file his papers and retire, as long as he continues to rehab and work toward a return, LTIR can provide relief.
A perfect current example is Ian Laperriere and the Flyers.
Shabbs, let me know if that is the question you wanted my opinion on.

Not necessarily. What the Isles end up getting on the market will likely be an upgrade on Poulin.

Should be a zero after that four if there was any justice in the NHL.
How many careers does this guy have to endanger ?
Reminds me of Bryan Marchment.
