Ottawa has been holding out on inquires for Chris Philips, demanding a 1st and a forward prospect in return.

If that's the case, he's not going anywhere.

You know, as I was watching Phillips play a monster game on Saturday, I was thinking, 'there's a guy playing like he wants to be here -- or who already knows he's going to be here.'

Maybe contract talks are back on, or at least going on at the same time as trade discussions.

That's what I thought about Fisher too, thinking a 1st was out of the question. I wouldn't be disappointed if Phillips stuck around and I would certainly not want him traded unless it was for an overpayment.

Funny how your perspective changes how your look at a situation.

For me, I saw Phillips game on Saturday just a great game by a player playing close to home, with Friends and family watching. His father isn't well and the team isn't playing well this year.

Sometimes (often) playing near your home town gives a player a boost. Add to that the fact that rumor has it several scouts were watching him and with Fisher just having been traded and everyone talking about his -24 (or whatever it is) and the fact that he needs to start showing people his play this year isn't the way he can play.

I firmly believe that while his wife and children will be staying behind for the remainder of this year, his heart knows what's best for Chris is to move to a more competitive team, play in the playoffs and show the NHL that he can still contribute given the right situation. Then he can choose to return to Ottawa, or move to a situation that he feels fits for him.

For me he knows every game is an audition and it's just taken the Fisher trade to slap him in the face to realizing that.

One of the best points about Chris Phillips comes from Jason York.

Phillips should welcome a trade to a contender to help turn his own season around and increase his re-sign value.

I wasn't at all surprised to see Fisher net us a first. I have serious doubts about Phillips doing the same, not because he's not equally valuable, but because I don't think I've ever seen any team since the lockout give up a 1st for a defense-first guy.

Who knows, tho', what a sense of desperation will do to a team / GM.

Yeah, that's fair, too. One or the other, at any rate.

I meant no disrespect. I only meant depending on how you viewed the circumstances around Chris' game.

I'm pretty torn. Part of me hopes he's decided to waive his NTC and is auditioning his talents to help the team get a better return.

The other part of me is hoping he has decided not to waive, and is showing the team what he can do to help the team over the next couple of years and show how much he wants to stay.

I don't know which is best to be honest, but unless we get at least a 1st and a prospect ( I know wishful thinking) part of me really hopes he stays and signs on for 3 years at a reasonable price.

I'd just lose it though if he doesn't get traded and leaves via FA in the summer...another player lost without anything coming back is just not what this team needs. Well unless they are Kuba or Kovalev. Just having either or both of those two guys gone and their $$$ off the books is a bonus, at least in my opinion.

Gonchar hobbled during practice and leaves the ice.

None taken.

I largely share your position, in fact. I'd prefer if Phillips stayed; if he doesn't, then it needs to be a serious overpay -- a 2nd isn't enough.

Make no mistake, tho': either he re-signs or is traded by Feb. 28th. There are no other options given the state of the franchise.

If SC is correct, I'd be surprised if CP4 is a Senator at the end of the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes to the Canucks. THey're hurting real bad on D (yet keep on winning)

Also, I really feel bad for Phillips. Not sure if it was mentioned but Phillips' dad isn't doing too well and he went and visited him in the hospital in fort mcmurray during this road trip. So he's worrying about his father, AND worrying about leaving the only team he's ever played for, while playing some tough games on the ice. Gotta feel for him, I just hope he's happy at the end of it all (including the senators)

According to Scott MacArthur, Gonchar was injured at practice and hobbled off the ice. No further details as of yet. But this could have serious implications on any trades involving D, don't you think?

Not personally...it's not like we're on the cusp of a playoff spot and now need to fill a hole...The only thing is how badly they want to piss off the people in Binghampton. If you trade Phillips and Gonchar is out for a while, then callups will be required and that only hurts their chances of making the playoffs.

I don't think it impacts trading Kuba or Phillips at all.

Another Mike Fisher scenario exactly. Aim for the moon, take the next best offer.

Nothing wrong with that.
