Gonchar should be good to go vs the Isles tomorrow according to reports.

Another Mike Fisher scenario exactly. Aim for the moon, take the next best offer.

Nothing wrong with that.

Imagine we get a first for Phillips AND Gonchar and draft in the first round 4 times? Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh!

Note, anyone who feels the need to say something like, "That's not very likely, Spader, for the following reasons..." is a big, dumb, jerk. Pout

I just can't see a 1st for Phillips, I'm not sure why, but I just can't wrap my head around it. Fisher I could see either a 1st or a legit prospect, but not Phillips (IMO). I think we could get a Jamie McGinn style prospect + perhaps a 4th rounder, but I think that's where it ends (please be wrong and land us a 1st!)

As for Gonchar, I could easily see a 1st coming back for him, but I've been thinking about possible forwards that Murray would covet, and I'm pretty sure he'd be looking at Brassard for Gonchar. I give this specific example because I can't see too many teams being able to add Gonchar into their cap plans, but Columbus could - and if we could get Brassard + 3rd round pick, I'd say that everyone's happy (although, I maintain that we should be keeping Gonchar).

Watch for Kovalev's return IMO, he's playing into a 3rd rounder + scenario right now.

That scare may be enough for Murray to pull the trigger even quicker on some of the Sens injury prone players that are rumored to be on the move, specifically Gonchar, Michalek, Kovalev and Kuba.

Phillips to Vancouver for Cody Hodgson and/or Mason Raymond. Is that aiming too high?

LOL

Maybe for Raymond, they've been REALLY disappointed with him this year, but if you want Hodgson, you'd better be prepped to send Vancouver next year's 1st rounder.

I can't see them trading Michalek. He's only around 26 yrs old. They need to keep some players.. and the way he has been playing lately -- I would certainly keep him -- UNLESS the deal is just way too good to turn down. Like Toronto's 1st round pick from Boston + a GOOD forward prospect -- not a salary dump.

I think the Sens should make a good push to try and get Brassard from CBJ (who are apparently shopping him for some reason)

Regin, Weircoch, NSH 1st

for

Brassard, Filatov

Probably more of a draft day deal once the Sens are sure to draft Landeskog.

Am I out to lunch on this one?

Considering all the assets that we have that are completely expendable, I don't see why we start unloading picks and prospects. Particularly for a very unproven Filatov. Effectively, we've just traded Regin, Weircioch, and Fisher for Brassard and Filatov. I call that an overpayment.

Hmmm...the price is a little high, but the value is there. I'm scared poopless of Filatov though, I'm just not sure he can make it as an NHLer on a day-to-day grind. I assume Voracek is off limits in this scenario? I'd pay that package for Brassard and Voracek without batting an eye.

I posted somewhere that I thought Gonchar for Brassard made a lot of sense.

I don't think you're out to lunch on this one personally.

Filatov has everything, but the desire to push himself. That is too much for him to overcome IMO.

And the body of a teen boy. He's got talent, but I'm not sure I'd want to invest that heavily in him.

Someone tell me that Thrashers aren't gonna trade Bogosian to the Bs for Toronto's 1st. I have a bad feeling about it...and I would hate to see Bogo on the Bs beside Chara.

Around the League Updates - Part Two
Hey guys,

Wow! What a day. If I didn't already have a job, I would have been able to apprise you all of the growing chatter between GMs. Last night, I reported that 1st round picks around the league no longer had the high value of years past. As we approach the February 28th deadline, three 1st round picks have been moved, and that's not including LA, Atlanta, Phoenix, and quite possibly Detroit's 1st rounders. That hasn't changed. I promised last night that I had more to report, but I'll do my best to keep it brief.

Regarding my adopted team, the Dallas Stars made their biggest splash when they acquired Langenbrunner; it is worth mentioning that they had some serious internal cap-maneuvering to do as they were a touch over their self-imposed cap-limit. That maneuvering resulted in Fabian Brunnstrom to the Leafs. Regardless of their money issues, it is extremely unlikely that Brad Richards will be traded - while our GM Joe Nieuwendyk continues to listen to offers, he hasn't received anything worth discussing and will approach the playoffs hoping that Richards can once and for all, carry this young team deep into the playoffs. It is believed that additional playoffs revenues will result in a long-term deal for Richards, but he has to get the team there first.

It's interesting to note that their Pacific rivals, specifically the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings are working the phones with the most intensity in the league. Having lost out on Francois Beauchemin to the Anaheim Ducks, the Sharks have turned their attention towards Chris Philips of the Ottawa Senators. My source from San Jose has suggested that Sharks have offered young forward Devin Setegochi for the veteran defenseman. However, the Senators are not keen on absorbing contracts and have requested picks or prospects. Could a 1st be attached to Setegochi? I will hopefully have more on this development by the end of the week. But the Sharks may want to hurry; as the trading deadline looms near, other teams have made initial offers for Philips. It is believed that the Vancouver Canucks might have been interested at some point, but they have chosen to wait for more medical updates on their depleted defensive corps. A Calgary Flames' source suggested that the management team are desperate to make the playoffs, and have made inquiries to Ottawa. This should present an interesting storyline for the trading deadline as I believe that any deal involving Philips will immediately raise the stakes for teams keying in on the Toronto Maple Leafs' Tomas Kaberle, as it is believed he has made some compromise with GM Brian Burke regarding his NTC.

As I reported last night, LA are desperate for any help in their top-six, but have narrowed their search to Edmonton Oilers' Dustin Penner. Mr. Eliot Friedman reported on CBC's website (link) that the Kings have shut down any discussion involving their own top-prospect Brayden Schenn. This was reported last night by myself, and it appears that Mr. Friedman is a bit behind the times. While the Kings may have shut down offers for Schenn, negotiations are on-going between both teams.

Best of luck for the rest of the week guys - lots of work to do.

Cheers,

- DD
