Spezza will not be traded, according to Murray. Added to the list of "untouchables".

1st + prospect + maybe some salary

1st + decent prospect + roster player is my guess.

That sounds like a lot. I'd be shocked to see him get that sort of return. He's eclipsed 70 pts twice in 8 seasons and he's guaranteed to miss 10+ games a season. 2nd + decent prospect + roster player is much more likely, IMO.

If Spezza is traded I will be as shocked as I would be if Phillips wasn't.

They shouldn't do it then, he's a solid player to go forward with. This time next year, re-visit the trade scenario.

Agreed. I honestly don't think his value right now warrants a trade.

I am just wondering.... if you are Shero in Piuttsburgh, do you call up Florida and offer the injured Malkin (if you are even able to trade him) for Weiss + (Booth?) to balance out the $$$, which would give Florida a superstar C once he returns, and gives Pittsburgh immediate help. What do you think?

Not a good enough haul for Malkin IMHO.

Well Florida might not even want to give that much up.

I was also thinking you could look at a team like Edmonton and work something out around Penner + Cogliano.

Pittsburgh is done this year if they don't get immediate help... and they are limited to what they can do as long as they have those massive contracts.

It might be just me, but I simply can't imagine Shero moving one of the premiere Cs in the league for Penner + Cogliano, even if the 1st rounder is in play. Something centered around Eriksson + Benn or Neal + Benn might work though (as an example only).

EDIT: Weiss + Booth + 1st rounder might work as well, but does Shero send Malkin to an Eastern team? I would probably not.

Penner + Cogliano for Malkin? That's brutal.

I agree with SpezD that it would likely have to be 2 great young NHL pieces + picks and prospects for the Pens to even consider a trade. I don't think Shero is willing to throw away the Pens future of dominant centers just to save thes rest of this season.

Ottawa has been holding out on inquires for Chris Philips, demanding a 1st and a forward prospect in return.

If that's the case, he's not going anywhere.

You know, as I was watching Phillips play a monster game on Saturday, I was thinking, 'there's a guy playing like he wants to be here -- or who already knows he's going to be here.'

Maybe contract talks are back on, or at least going on at the same time as trade discussions.

That's what I thought about Fisher too, thinking a 1st was out of the question. I wouldn't be disappointed if Phillips stuck around and I would certainly not want him traded unless it was for an overpayment.

Funny how your perspective changes how your look at a situation.

For me, I saw Phillips game on Saturday just a great game by a player playing close to home, with Friends and family watching. His father isn't well and the team isn't playing well this year.

Sometimes (often) playing near your home town gives a player a boost. Add to that the fact that rumor has it several scouts were watching him and with Fisher just having been traded and everyone talking about his -24 (or whatever it is) and the fact that he needs to start showing people his play this year isn't the way he can play.

I firmly believe that while his wife and children will be staying behind for the remainder of this year, his heart knows what's best for Chris is to move to a more competitive team, play in the playoffs and show the NHL that he can still contribute given the right situation. Then he can choose to return to Ottawa, or move to a situation that he feels fits for him.

For me he knows every game is an audition and it's just taken the Fisher trade to slap him in the face to realizing that.

One of the best points about Chris Phillips comes from Jason York.

Phillips should welcome a trade to a contender to help turn his own season around and increase his re-sign value.
