They got a 1st, Grabner, and Steve Bernier in the deal.

Ballard was/is signed to a contract though, this is purely a rental.

Likely a conditional pick on that basis.

Seriously, as a fan who is used to seeing players leave for nothing, I'll take something.

I didn't realize Voynov was a D-man, we probably need all forward prospects.

Depending on how good he is, he could simply make another D prospect more expendable or be an asset in a summer or deadline deal.

Simmonds alone would be a nice, physical winger to insulate Regin. He's also hit 40 points in the NHL already.

I'd be surprised if we saw any moves beyond Ruutu & Kovalev. Maybe, maybe some one takes Kuba. Beyond that, I don't see much happening. I especially don't see Phillips getting traded -- my guess is he'll be re-signed days / hours before the deadline.

I think most people here are setting themselves up for a huge disappointment, to be honest. We're going to collect an extra 2nd / 3rd pick or to two, and maybe a mid-level prospect, this trade deadline, tops, I'd say. Expecting the team to be re-built in an afternoon, or to move guys like Fisher, Alfie, Kelly, Neil, or Phillips -- I really just don't see those things happening.

It's going to be minor moves and staying the course (i.e., bottoming out) for the next 3 months. This June / July, we'll have a top-ish draft pick, a couple extra picks, and about 10+ million in acquired cap space to re-jig this team. And that's about it: no big mega changing-the-face of the franchise trades, nothing.

I feel that Eugene's had it. I wouldn't be surprised if Murray was moved into a senior role to make room for a new GM because I kindda agree that Murray would be very reluctant to "break it open" and start selling off long-time players while it would be much more feasible for new GM; who would have few or no "emotional attachment" to the players ...

EDIT : I don't know if I could have made that sentence longer; even if I had tried Smile

The bigger stuff will happen in the summer I think. We almost need a re-do of the Kovalev and Leclaire acquisitions... a re-do that works though so we can land a top-line winger/sniper and a #1 goalie among other things... hopefully, whoever is GM can pull some trades and use the assets we have to start to address the issues, again.

Well, "bigger stuff" can be classified into 2 categories :

- Selling : that will happen sooner rather than later (between now and the trade deadline).
- buying : I agree with you that most of that will happen in the summer (maybe at the draft) ...

I've been thinking the same the last couple of days. I'd say it's really highly unlikely Fisher moves, I'd agree that Phillips will be re-signed, Kuba will most likely stay until the off-season unless Murray gets an offer he likes, Spezza stays, so does Alfie, Gonchar, Kelly, Neil, Winchester, Z.Smith, Elliott, Karlsson. So who's left? As you say, Ruutu, Kovalev if we're lucky and Leclaire if we're really lucky. I'm seriously starting to doubt anything else happens, as you say, I think the Sens will go after a high pick, then re-tool instead of rebuild.

Could be wrong, but I've been thinking that the last few days.

I don't see us selling a lot though... we've got cap hits coming off the books that won't be coming back for sure (Kovalev, Leclaire, Ruutu). Moving Kuba would be a nice to have... but I think that will be hard to do.

Shannon and Phillips are UFA's and I agree with Dr. Poo that Phillips will probably re-sign with the Sens. Not sure what the future holds for Shannon... I guess it will all depend on if the price is right.

Oddly enough, Brodeur is a UFA after this year.

And we still have buyouts from Cheechoo, Emery and Alfie on the books next year.

I think this might be a way to look at it as well. We'll have 8.8 million from Kovalev and Leclaire, we might be able to move Kuba, so that's 12.5 million dollars to spend. If Phillips is moved, that's 16.5 million, Ruutu, that makes 17.7, Campoli (I'd like to keep him) 18.1, we could move some youth into more prominent roles, but we could also add a very talented player - or two if the right guy came available. Like how the Thrashers used cap space to improve their team, I can see the Sens trying to emulate that. In fact, I think we're following in the footsteps of the Hurricanes - minus the Cup unfortunately.

The Canes won the Cup, some guys got bigger contracts than they should of, they lost their way a little, stumbled in the standings, landed two or three key pieces via the draft, indoctrinated them quickly into the lineup surrounded by semi-veterans. All of a sudden their challenging for a spot and I feel it's similar to where we are, we stumbled, got the young player who should play next year (Cowen), have a few very talented players looking to crack the lineup, will likely draft quite high so we can get our own Skinner.

Nothing will happen with Leclaire; he'll just walk at the end of his contract. We will not trade him (we wish) or re-sign him. I'd almost be tempted to waive him and hope someone takes him on re-entry ... I could see Kovalev being traded for a 3rd round pick.

I'd waive him and send him to Bingo. Might as well clear the roster space for someone that will be here next year (Lehner)

He's a D-man, but he seems like the real deal. His numbers in the AHL are great. He currently has 29 points in 37 games for Manchester. Admittedly, I'm literally just reading off his stats, and that's all that I know about him, but those are impressive numbers.

I think you guys are a bit off on Fisher's position.
The reason why he isn't playing on the wing is simple: our depth at center is god awful. Who do you suggest take that 2nd line C spot? Regin is a bit more talented, but awful on faceoffs. Other than that I don't see.
When CUllen was here they put Fisher a bit on the wings with Alfie.
