1st round pick +

Matt Cullen got a 2nd + and was a UFA, a signed Fisher has more value then that. A late 1st + a mid round pick is not out of the question (although I'm sure we would have to take salary back).

Seeing Kovalev on the board again makes me wonder who else will step up to ensure they have a job next season (elsewhere).

Players tend to start playing for themselves now that the season is pretty much pointless to the team.

And Kovalev has been given Fisher lessons on how to better disappear for stretches at a time.

That goes for just about anything. You might have a really nice car worth $4000 market value, but it is worth more to you to keep it and would cost more to replace it... so if someone offers $4000, why would you sell it if you really don't want to? But if someone offered $10000 then maybe you would.

Looks like a poison pill to me. Which is funny, IMO. And tells me this team isn't serious about making changes.

I'm sure you and I chatted about that, I firmly believe that Fisher, Alfredsson and Gonchar are staying and that Phillips is going. Although, at this point, I wouldn't even be surprised if he got re-signed. It's not a rebuild, it's a re-tool.

Fisher may also be of value to teams that don't want to spend to the cap. While his cap hit is 4.2 million (that's right, 4.2 million dollars), the real dollars owed to him is less as I remember.

Correct. He's owed $7M (4/3) over the next two years.

i think murray will try to re-sign phillips in july and deal him now. even at the risk of losing him.
as for fisher, i wouldn't be surprised to see him go but IMO it's going to take an impressive package, like a 1st +prospect, to get him off this team. he's got good value out there as the potential upsides he brings outweight the downsides.

as for gonchare, i'd rtather we keep him for next year as i don't think he'll be a no-show again... just my opinion.

If we do keep Gonchar, and he does show up, he'll have lots of value at this time next year with just a year left on his contract and (much?) better stats. Of course, that only matters if we're in a similar position next year at this time or need to clear a spot for a Rundblad or a Wiercioch.

I think we're a bubble team next year. We may make the playoffs but we're not going to do much if we get there. Melnyk cannot hope to break even from getting to the 2nd round. Each home playoff game brings in around $1M (that's an old figure, and it's probably $1.5M if not more). Gonchar's $5.5M is equivalent to 3-4 games -- let's just say an extra round of playoffs. If we make it in, will Gonchar (versus Rundblad or Cowen) get us to the second round? I don't think it's even 50/50 whether Gonchar (versus the other two) means we even get to the post-season. And missing, of course, gets you a better first rounder in 2012.

A lot of money is coming off the books next season. If it's a re-tool and we're a bubble team then Melnyk won't spend to the cap. That should help get the team to a break even point even if we just make it in and only end up with 2 home playoff dates right?

I think it’s hard to say if we’ll be a bubble team. That’ll depend heavily on who we get to tend goal, and who we get to replace Kovalev. Also, if we go with a really young D corps, that could weaken our chances, but if we sign a vet or two, that could improve our chances. For me, next year is currently a total mystery, and I really look forward to seeing how things unfold!

My thought exactly. We'll be the Carolina Hurricanes of this year. Hopefully a foward like Skinner, Spezza (Staal), Alfredsson (Jokinen - yes, that's about his level now), Gonchar (Pitkanen), McBain (Rundblad), Cowen (Gleason, but not quite).

The goalie issue will be a big one, but I believe we'll fight for 8th until the final day - I guess, depending on the moves.

A lot of ifs and Cam Ward helps make that team competitive for sure so a goalie of that caliber will be difficult to find.

You have to do it. You have to go out and get someone whose at least in the top 8 goalies in the East. Vokoun, Bryzgalov, Tim Thomas if they move him (hey, they might), Rinne ( I love you ), Schneider (not really sold on a young goalie), Mason (ditto). I can't think of others who might be out there, but there will be. Our new GM HAS to find them and acquire one of them.

And a quick rumour of note that was sent to me this afternoon. Boston appears to be the team pushing hardest for Chris Phillips right now and apparently the Sens have an interest in Blake Wheeler.

That's a fairly interesting deal.
