The two Gibson guys are the only ones I've really heard anything about. If either is available in the 2nd round, my guess is we go for him.

While I agree it's a no-brainer we need to grab a couple of goalies in this draft, I'm not sure about the 2nd round. We have Anderson for 3 years and Lehner after that. There is an excellent chance we are not going to be looking for a #1 any time soon. Grabbing a goalie in the first two rounds you are typically looking for the elusive sure-thing, real-deal. And as we know, it's very rare to get a great goalie in the early rounds because goalies take so long to develop. You simply cannot (reliably) predict a goalie's potential at 18-19.

True, we got Lehner in the 2nd, and he was only 18 at the time, but I believe our need at the time was much greater. We can afford to wait until the mid rounds and pick a project that will take 3-4 years to be ready for the AHL.

Meh. If Lehner takes the backup role at any point this year or next, we're going to need a few goalies for the AHL, including a real starter. And I don't think you can have too many great goalies coming up the pipe. I tend to think we'll pick a goalie with one of those six top-65 picks, but we'll see. When goalies get drafted is always such a crapshoot, I confess.

Conz is the youngest ever goalie in the Swiss league who started at age 16. This is far younger than Martin Gerber and Jonas Hiller when they made their debut. This simply showed that the kid has more potential than Gerber and Hiller at that age and could develop even further.

But then, the more I read, the more people were saying that it was an isolated incident and that he's possibly too small etc.etc.etc. SD says: grab him with a 5th round pick and hope he booms, not busts.

If he's been passed over for two years we can grab him with our 7th probably.

I wouldn't take that risk personally. Watching him at the WJC made me believe he's got some serious talent. If he's around with our 5th or at the latest the Kovalev pick, I'd do it personally. Boom or bust!

Since we're talking about goalies I'll throw a name in the ring. Mike Morrisson of the Kitchener Rangers split duties this year and could likely be had with a late round pick. The guy just really emerged this season so it's interesting to see if he's gonna keep getting better or just plateau's from this point on. Maybe he's a guy we look at signing for free, but I think we should spend a late round pick on a goalie anyways so he might not be a bad idea.

Yeah, I like him a lot. Surely he won't be around in the 6th or 7th, will he?

He's ranked 6th in North America by CSB, so yeah I think he could fall that late. It's a real crapshoot with goalies, but I'm going on the assumption that only 2 goalies get picked in the first 100 picks or so (which seems to be the trend lately). I haven't watched many of the goalies outside of about 5 guys, but this does seem like a weaker crop, so I would be hesitant to stock up early.

Maybe we spend Kovalev's pick + our 7th (Potulny's pick must be from the next year I assume) to try to grab Morrison and Conz? I can see those two picks giving us some nice G depth moving forward.

I don't personally buy into the Conz hype. I would try for one of Gibson/Gibson/Perhonen in the 3rd round (hopefully one of them is leftover) and then go out and get whoever is left out of Morrisson, Binnington, Hellberg, Volden in the 7th.

I wanna draft Hellberg just for the name.

I’m hearing a lot more buzz that this is the kid the Avs might take at No. 2 – if he’s still available, that is. One high-ranking NHL person told me he believes Colorado will take him, in fact, based on what he’s been hearing.

Has anyone else heard that? I'm gonna post it on HF and see if anyone else has heard it. It makes some sense, Huberdeau looks amazing and he plays both LW and C - well.

I wouldn't be surprised by that at all to be honest. I personally think he's the 3rd most talented player in the draft so it wouldn't be an early pick in that regard. I think a lot of NHL scouts and execs may agree with that assessment too. And the fact that he plays wing too is a huge plus for a team like Colorado I'm sure.

If Landeskog makes it past 2 I can actually see him tumble all the way to #6. I wouldn't be as thrilled with it as some, but I know lots of people in Ottawa who would be happy.
