if we draft Lando IMO we might regret not grabing someone else further down the line.

Any good goalies in this draft that we might take a flyer on? We could use a couple.

Also, Jordan Binnington has lead his team Owen Sound to the Mem Cup so he should be considered.

Wasn't there a goalie who was brought up from the USHL at the end of their season, played some NCAA playoff games, then got sent up to an AHL team? All in the space of a less than a month? I posted an article on him but can't find it now (it's too far back to be in the list of my recent posts).

There are two goalies named Gibson ranked in the top-5 draft-eligible goalies. One of them is a Finn. Go figure.

Binnington in Binghamton has a nice ring to it. But didn't he lose the starting job to Zador in the regular season (he had a .899 SV%)? And now in the Memorial Cup he is 0-2.

My guess is we use one of those 3 2nd-rounders to grab a goalie. Seems like a no-brainer to me, given that we only have 1 legitimate goalie prospect.

The two Gibson guys are the only ones I've really heard anything about. If either is available in the 2nd round, my guess is we go for him.

While I agree it's a no-brainer we need to grab a couple of goalies in this draft, I'm not sure about the 2nd round. We have Anderson for 3 years and Lehner after that. There is an excellent chance we are not going to be looking for a #1 any time soon. Grabbing a goalie in the first two rounds you are typically looking for the elusive sure-thing, real-deal. And as we know, it's very rare to get a great goalie in the early rounds because goalies take so long to develop. You simply cannot (reliably) predict a goalie's potential at 18-19.

True, we got Lehner in the 2nd, and he was only 18 at the time, but I believe our need at the time was much greater. We can afford to wait until the mid rounds and pick a project that will take 3-4 years to be ready for the AHL.

The guy I mentioned could probably be had in the third or fourth maybe, but I am basing that on nothnig but past goalies being drafted and the crapshootiness of this draft.

He was projected to go first round for a while, but now I'm not sure. He's f-ing great though, if we can nab him with one of our 2nds, we're laughing.

lol no he wasn't, he's been passed over in two drafts.

I must be thinking of someone else then with a close name. There was a guy who played for...I want to say Germany in the WJC Gonz, Conz, something like that that I read was being looked at as either a late 1st rounder or somewhere in the 2nd round.

You're right, I researched it a little and there was hype over him starting for the Swiss team:

Conz is the youngest ever goalie in the Swiss league who started at age 16. This is far younger than Martin Gerber and Jonas Hiller when they made their debut. This simply showed that the kid has more potential than Gerber and Hiller at that age and could develop even further.

But then, the more I read, the more people were saying that it was an isolated incident and that he's possibly too small etc.etc.etc. SD says: grab him with a 5th round pick and hope he booms, not busts.

Meh. If Lehner takes the backup role at any point this year or next, we're going to need a few goalies for the AHL, including a real starter. And I don't think you can have too many great goalies coming up the pipe. I tend to think we'll pick a goalie with one of those six top-65 picks, but we'll see. When goalies get drafted is always such a crapshoot, I confess.

If he's been passed over for two years we can grab him with our 7th probably.

I wouldn't take that risk personally. Watching him at the WJC made me believe he's got some serious talent. If he's around with our 5th or at the latest the Kovalev pick, I'd do it personally. Boom or bust!
