You're talking about a goalie who would turn this team into an Eastern conference favorite. There's a price to pay for that.

Here's some numbers to consider:

Vokoun's .925 save percentage last year was the third best in the NHL. His 2.55 GAA in the top 20 eventhough he was played for the third-last place team in the league last year.

Here's some more numbers: Brian Elliott faced 1424 shots last year. He allowed 130 goals for a .909 save percentage. With Vokoun's save percentage, that would have translated to 107 goals against, assuming the same number of shots against. A difference of 23 goals. Ottawa lost 10 games last year by 2 goals or less. That difference of 23 goals translates into 3 to 8 wins. Essentially the difference between winning the division and home ice and finishing second in the division with no home ice.

Vokoun would definately make a bigger impact on this team than Savard. Remmber when we had Hasek? It just felt like we could win every night and we didn't have to rely on our offense all the time. That didn't end well, but you get the point

Vokoun is Cal Ripken compared to Hasek.

I don't think it would happen, but there was an article that was peuclating the Devils could move Zajac in order to shed money off the cap. He would look good in an Ottawa uniform.

I'm haven't seen the article that Big Ev refers in regards to Zajac being moved, but I agree with him.

Zajac in the only piece the other teams want that doesn't have a NTC or NMC.

Below are the potential candidates to be moved and the problem with trying to get rid of them to make room for Kovalchuk. Keep in mind, the Devils have 8 players on their roster with either a NTC or NMC which limits their options.

Elias - $6,000,000 - NMC
Rolston - +$5,000,000 - NTC and contract is a +35 yr old when signed
Arnott - $4,500,000 - NMC
Langenbrunner - $2,800,000 - NTC
Volchenkov and White - NTC's
Tallinder - just signed - terrible PR move

That leaves:

Salvador - $2,900,000 - good luck moving that other than waiving or buying out. May happen.
Clarkson - +$2,600,000 - not moving IMO
Zubrus - $3,400,000 - that is a tough contract to move

Zajac is the only asset to move and get something of quality (picks + prospects) back.

We shall wait and see. I can see Zajac being moved.

I see what you're saying CR, but Salvador could be waived, don't forget that Lou doesn't really have issues with that if he sees the need. I'm not sure what the Devils will do, whether it's Zubrus or Salvador, but I'm almost 100% positive that it won't included Zajac - not only because he's young and has formed an effective unit with Parise for SOME of last year, but also because the Devils aren't really flush with playmaking centers. Elias can play center, but that's a risk to bank on him with his Hep. A, Arnott could play top line center, but he's not durable anymore and is oft injured.

I hope they're forced to move Zajac, I really do, it will burn them in the long run (again, IMO) and there are a number of different ways to have avoided it - including not signing Kovalchuk at all and going after someone like...say Frolov.

So we agree that it is either:

Salvador and getting nothing in return yet still pay him; or Zajac and get future assets.

personaly i think we'd be overpaying by trying to acquire vokoun. i believe that leclaire is a cheaper bet and could provide a fine option. with vokoun i have a feeling he will walk after this season and test the UFA market. then what did you give up? leclaire, a 1st and a young player? for what? one year with vokoun just so we might make it past the 1st round? seriously with our young D we are still a couple of years from making real damage in the playoffs...

i'd rather go with what we have and see if we can make it further in the playoffs with effort.

now marc savard... that to me is interesting. we'd get him for many year, we'd have our top 2 line centered like crazy(leaving fisher to take care of the 3rd and you know that would be awesome). in a couple of years we'd be set in the top 3 in the east.
counting that savard can stay healthy, i'd like a savard trade better...

of course there is the possibility of a re-signed vokoun coming back, that could be interesting.

i came home tonight and refreshed TSN only to see jason spezza's face on the video screen, i nearly lost my lunch. i thought we had a trade. they sure pick their time to release a sens report.

oh well, at least they're talking about us.

i doubt we'd still even be remotly interested in campbell. we filled that need with gonchar and we've got enough prospects coming up that we might not need to ink a FA or trade for another D for the next 5 years.
