If a guy like Gudbranson for example (wont happen) fell to 16th, you really think they are going to go after McFarland? No shot and I would be furious if they did. The 2nd, 3rd, and going on you draft for depth and guys that might fit into the organizations needs.

Not taking the BPA in the 1st round is an absolute disaster waiting to happen.

Unless the BPA turns out to be a bust. But that never happens so this is a surefire strategy for sure.

Well we didn't take the BPA last year, that's for sure.

They absolutely did, why do you think they drafted a D in Cowen. He was probably about 4th or 5th on The Sens list and they got him at 9.

Exactly a Coburn - maybe a little better IMO, but very, very similar.

We knew about the wonky knee when we drafted him and the Sens did their due diligence in examining him and making sure he'd recover. The kid needs this summer and the knee will be a lot better. As for the WJC, that was a joke. The Murrays weren't quiet about their displeasure with that gong show.

I agree with all that but I still think they missed the boat by drafting Cowen over MPS.

Furthermore, Cowen needs a full summer and a full season anywhere BUT the NHL to prove that his knee is a lot better. Then we'll see. This is a long-term project. Karlsson, he ain't.

exactly. they knew they had wiercioch, karlsson, and gyrba, and still elected to draft another d-man because he was the bpa.

at the same time look at what happened to the Minnesota Timberwolves. They drafted the BPAs two years ago and wound up with 4 players that each played the same position. At some point you have to draft for what you need versus who's the best player at the time.

That being said, Minnesota drafted and traded 2 of these players (I believe) so why not trade down in the draft and get another asset?

I think we will have a Tyler Myers for sure, it will just take a bit longer. I dont think Myers has the mean streak that Cowen has either. Gotta be patient with him for sure. 2 or 3 years we will be talking about 2 towers on defense and Karlsson.

Seriously, Murray picked Cowen for 3 or 4 years down the road, not this year or next. He's going to be an absolute stud D man in The NHL.

Like Murray said, if there is one guy that is way ahead of another player on their list, they will take him. Last year is still a perfect example with Cowen and MPS. This year the BPA will more then likely be a center so it works out for Ottawa in that sense. If one of those potential stud D men fall to Ottawa and guys like Grunland, Skinner, Johanssen, so on are all gone, they will take a D again.

Ya, the center postion and forward prospects would still be weak... but look at it this way, I wouldnt turn down a Ferarri if I all I needed was an SUV.

As long as you could sell off the Ferarri, keep the extra cash and still get your SUV I'm cool with it. Dancing

Pretty much, maybe not even that long. Remember Myers also looked poor at the WJC. Granted they played him more than 11 minutes or whatever they played Cowen, but for most of the tournament Myers looked long, lanky, clumsy and slow.

Cowen could very well be a better NHLer then he was Jr, and that's saying something. When you are that big and can cover that much of the ice with the speed he actually has, he's going to be a force.

MPS's potential is no where near Cowen's.

Someone explain to me why people dismiss Cowen after his tower of strength for Spokane when they won the Mem Cup. HE was the driving force behind them winning it all, we should be thanking our lucky stars that we got the next great leader for this team to go with Karlsson.

That's my opinion. Maybe I put more stock in D, but I'd be regretful if we didn't select Cowen last year.

If you offered Cowen to Edmonton for MPS straight-up, Kevin Lowe would tell Steve Tambellini to laugh at you.

That's because it would be easier/cheaper/better to have a team of monkeys GMing the Oilers.

N4L, I knew what you meant when you said Cowen and Karlsson will be the two towers on defence, but Karlsson isn't exactly a tower lol...Cowen would be the CN Tower whereas Karlsson would be the Peace Tower Ottawa Senators off-season talk - Page 19 54934

I have a feeling that if they drafted MPS nobody would be talking about how we didn't draft Cowen because they'd be too exicted about what he has done so far in Sweden and on the world stage.

There's no denying that right now MPS's stock is higher than Cowen's, so I don't see why SWSF is wrong on that one.

And vis versa, Murray would laugh Tambellini out the door as well.

Cowen is going to be a 25-30 min a night player, he just needs to work on his leg and get his stride back. MPS will probably be a top 6 forward.

I'm not going to speak in absolutes here. Obviously, your guess is as good as mine.

MPS' stock is higher to hockey fans, I highly doubt the stock would be higher to scouts and GMs. But, that's my opinion, they might just laugh.
