In mine and a lot of other people's opinion, at least.

For this draft because we got Lehner last year.

So, who should it have been? And remember one of our highest scouts is a European scout who watches a ton of Swedes play and has been behind Karlsson, Lehner, Silfverberg, Petersson to name a few.

Well I've already voiced my opinion on how I felt that Ottawa and Dallas screwed up big time by not getting MPS. We needed a forward, he has the potential to be like a Marian Hossa.

Edit: So maybe Cowen might have been the BPA, but we needed a forward bad. Doesn't mean I don't like Cowen though.

Marian Hossa without the diligent 2-way play and the goal scoring, but yeah maybe.

Doesn't it strike you as queer that the Forsberg said no to MPS and yes to Cowen? It should tell you something. And don't look at me, I have no idea what they were thinking, but they were thinking something about MPS that the casual fan does NOT know about.

I'm sure Forsberg is behind Tim Murray in the pecking order too.

They were probably thinking that his defence lacks, but he's a fantastic skater, he's a big guy, hard to get off the puck, great scorer, and pretty good playmaker too. He was just named an all-star at the Worlds, and led his team in scoring (they also had Nicklas Backstrom on the team).

Oh he is for sure, but Forsberg got his way a lot. Karlsson, Silfverberg, Petersson. Lehner was all of them I'm sure, but you can't discount how much of Forsberg's Swedish/European knowledge came to the forefront - and then how much T. and B. Murray and Dorion etc. all took his advice. If he was smashing his fists on the table for MPS, they surely would have gone with him. Damn, I think they were looking for an excuse to take MPS instead of Cowen, but when a guy like Cowen falls to you in 9th, how can you not take him?

I know everyone's got high expectations for Cowen but I'm pretty skeptical about him right now. Wonky knee, shattered confidence from the WJHC... I really hope he's everything and more than we all expect but I seriously have my doubts.

We knew about the wonky knee when we drafted him and the Sens did their due diligence in examining him and making sure he'd recover. The kid needs this summer and the knee will be a lot better. As for the WJC, that was a joke. The Murrays weren't quiet about their displeasure with that gong show.

Wouldnt touch a goaltender within the first 3 or 4 rounds, why would you? You are drafting a goaltender to add depth apon the depth. You are looking for a backup goaltender to step into Ottawa or a number 1 down in Bingo within 4 or 5 years. Why would you waste a pick on a position where you are as strong as anywhere else?

Do you mean you wouldn't touch a goalie until later rounds for this particular draft or as a general rule. I would assume that Lehner would be the exception if that were the case.

As a general rule for The Sens at this point. You need a NA for sure, a Euro will play in Europe if all he is ever going to be is an AHLer or at the very best a backup in The NHL. A NA will stay and play in The AHL.

Now, you dont need a legit number 1 and you can take a chance on a guy who is very raw and has a high upside, you dont need that sure fire NHL goaltender (if there is any such thing as one anyways) in the first round, hell, maybe not even in the 2nd round unless it's just stupid not to take a certain guy.

The Sens are drafting for depth at the position and at the best of times there is no way to tell if a goaltender is going to be an NHLer except a select few. Drafting a guy late that The Sens like is what should and will be done for the next few years, but it has to be a NA goaltender IMO. The late rounds this year or next is where they will find one.

I'm just saying I sort of expect a Tyler Myers but know we're not going to get one. Maybe a Coburn?

If a guy like Gudbranson for example (wont happen) fell to 16th, you really think they are going to go after McFarland? No shot and I would be furious if they did. The 2nd, 3rd, and going on you draft for depth and guys that might fit into the organizations needs.

Not taking the BPA in the 1st round is an absolute disaster waiting to happen.

Unless the BPA turns out to be a bust. But that never happens so this is a surefire strategy for sure.

Well we didn't take the BPA last year, that's for sure.

They absolutely did, why do you think they drafted a D in Cowen. He was probably about 4th or 5th on The Sens list and they got him at 9.

Exactly a Coburn - maybe a little better IMO, but very, very similar.

I agree with all that but I still think they missed the boat by drafting Cowen over MPS.

Furthermore, Cowen needs a full summer and a full season anywhere BUT the NHL to prove that his knee is a lot better. Then we'll see. This is a long-term project. Karlsson, he ain't.
