Elliot and Lehener having proven nothing/next to nothing in the NHL yet, so turning down Lou would be a mistake.
What exactly has Luongo proved? Hell, Leighton has done more then he has now. Elliott and Luongo are about on the same level IMO, I think Luongo is an average goaltender and a playoff pushover. He's over rated by the media in a huge way and he has been pulled more then any goaltender this year. He's soft, he's mentally weak, and he cant handle playoff hockey.
The guy is on a contract until he is over 40 at over 6 mil a year, worst contract in The NHL IMO. Ill take Elliott and his 29 win at 600K every year vs Luongo and his 6 plus mil having done nothing to prove he is worth that money. Elliott is a dream goaltender for a team that is tight against the cap like The Sens.
His extension is actually 5.3 million fwiw.
And while i agree that you build a solid defence and as long as you have a decent goalie (Osgood-esque) you'll be fine. But turning down Luongo would be silly at this point. He would easily become the bes goaltender the Senators have ever had. Oh and by the way, the dude won a gold medal, i know you hate the Olympics and all but it's a huge feat.
I'm not saying Luongo is the answer to a cup, but he'd get us a heck of a lot closer than Elliott.
Will he be in a year or two? I dont think he will.
As for the Gold Medal, he almost cost Canada that medal twice, once against Slovakia the other against USA in the finals. The best goaltender Canada has is Cam Ward and if he wasnt hurt he would have been the guy in the nets. But you are right, it is a huge feat, if only he had Pronger, Keith, Seabrook, Boyle, Doughtey, and Neidamayer in front of him every night.
