So, am I the only one who thinks smoked meat and pastrami are the same thing?

Hindsight is 20/20. Redden was a top 5 defenceman in the league that year.

A LOT of people didnt want Chara gone. The fact he wasnt even offered a contract by Muckler is embarassing as a Sens fan. Murray was one of those people who didnt want Chara gone just so people know.

We could have had both going forward. Sad Both...and then when Redden started to suck, we would have still had the Norris winning D-man.

I'm sad.

There's a long interview with Murray somewhere where he was saying that he and the entire coaching staff was pleading and pleading with Muckler to get it done. Murray should have gone straight to Melnyk and said, sign them both! You don't let Zdeno Chara walk, you don't do it.

I get the choice made between the 2 and Im not gonna go on a long speel about how it was the wrong choice at the time because it was literally 50/50. The issue I have always had was the fact Muckler didnt even offer the guy a deal and right from the horses mouth, he was not only insulted, but it actually hurt the guy.

Then he plays here and ignorant fans boo the guy.

Chara will finish his career in Boston. I think the Boston management was aware of the salary problems they would have had if they had signed Kessel long-term with Chara's contract needing to be re-upped. They'll make sure they have the $$ space to outbid anyone. He's their captain, unfortunately one franchise has already made the colossal error of letting him go -- rest assured, it won't happen again.

That choice is fine, there's no problem at all, but why the heck couldn't we have kept both? The salary cap? Big deal, you work around the cap in order to keep your 2 best D-men in franchise history. This isn't Anton Volchenkov, this is Zdeno Chara and we let him walk...makes me want to puke.

It's really not their choice though - unless he's willing to re-up there.

Why would he want to leave though? He could continue on living in a great city, where the fans love him and he's their leader.

Thing is, Nashville has one more year of Weber at 4.5M and then he may be out of their price range, I'm guessing 6.5-7M by that time. Nashville is a budget team not a cap team.

So instead they have a 4.2 million dollar 3rd line center? How is that any better for a cap team?
Budget teams love players with cap hits higher than the actual salary.

Agreed. But his actual salary is still too high for a budget team to be paying a 3rd line center.
Salary would be high for a 3rd line centre, but he would be their top scoring centre man this year. Their current 2nd line centre is David Legwand with a whopping 10G 26A in 73 games.

I dunno, I agree with the principal of what you're saying, don't get me wrong, but in this sport specifically, anything can happen in terms of where a player goes. It's no longer unfathonable for a Bruin to sign with the Habs or a Hab to sign with the Leafs like Komisarek etc.

I think until he's signed that contract a lot of teams are gonna have the fantasy or trying to outbid each other for Big Z. And if he hits the open market...it sounds like we still hold a little bit of a piece of his heart, so who knows? Depends what rumours you believe. But Muckler has always stated that he made an identical offer to both guys, so that he could keep both in the mix. When Chara refused and Redden agreed Mucks thought he had found the player with more character and signed Redden without even sending a counter offer to Chara.

Obviously there are conflicting reports here, but if Mucks side of the story is true, it's tough to blame the guy.

His career high is also 15 points higher than Fisher's. That's not even going into the fact that Fisher has played with better linemates this year. Still doesn't change the fact that Nashville would be shifting their money to a position that doesn't need filling since they already have Legwand there.

Legwand has had one good year in his career, whereas over the last 5 seasons Fisher has pretty much been good for 20+ goals and about 48 points. Way better than Legwand.

Legwand has 7 40+ point seasons
Fisher has 4 40+ point seasons

My point isn't that Legwand is better. It's that it doesn't make sense for Nashville to trade for a guy who will fill a role that's already filled. They won't get rid of Weber for a guy like Fisher (even though the added pieces are good). They will trade him for players who can put the puck in the net on a more consistent basis.

What *TOTAL BS*! Plekanec interferes with Foligno and elbows his stick up into his own face and Pillsbury Doughboy calls it high sticking? Then Sutton covers up the puck and gets cross-checked twice with no call.

Good kill.
