SpezDispenser wrote:While you have a point about the scheduling - and I'm a firm believer in that - Karlsson seemed to be able to make that adjustment rather quickly. I'm not sure if it's the indoctrination these guys get in the summers now, or if it's just purely based on being in top shape and having the hockey IQ to survive.

You have a point, I have forgotten about Wiercioch being in the NCAA, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that he makes it and thrives.

Karlsson was playing against men in a pro league as well. The CHL's primary goal is to get players AHL and NHL ready before they get there. It mimicks the pro game along with the off ice training and every day grind. The NCAA IMO forms smarter, more mature players but as far as being NHL ready at a young age, The CHL wins 90% of the time.
There really isnt much Cowen hasnt seen or isnt ready for. Weircoich, he's never player more then 40 games in a year at a low level, let along the best league in the world and playing 82.

Weircoich, if he signs a pro deal after his college season will not make that team out of camp. That's not a knock on him it's just a matter of getting used to a lot of things he has never seen before or has yet to expierence.

seriously i think there's a few prospects and players that could be gone before the draft. we could use another couple of 2nd rounders... lee, campoli, o'brien, zubov (if it can be done). even cody bass, i like him but i'm not sure he's got much of a shot at making the team anymore....

LOVED him up in Ottawa, he will be a better NHLer then an AHLer. Sucks for him because if he didnt get injured he would be an Ottawa Senator right now, in that time though, Smith has defently taken his place.

Well said though, I agree with all of this. 875K though, man, thats a bigger hit then I thought, but oh well.

wprager wrote:Cowen definitely has a much higher shot at making the team next season than Wiercioch. Wiercioch had a great season as a freshman; his sophomore season has not been a slump, but it has not been a huger improvement either. It would have to be a hell of a surprise for him to make the team out of camp. In fact, he may decide to stay at DU for one more year (if he's in a 3-year program he could be graduating). At best, I expect him to report to Bingo and, perhaps, get a call up toward the end of the year.

That said, I wouldn't say Cowen has had a full NHL camp. He was barely skating at the DC in July, and even by the time September rolled around he was far from 100%. He should be much stronger this year.

He played in an NHL pre season game, he had a full camp.

Yeah, that's fair enough, I can't really argue with any of that. Don't want to run the kid into the ground right away, damn NCAA schedule, fucks me up every time.

Easily the biggest factor turning pro from The NCAA.

It's the principal though, at what point does Brian Lee deserve that kind of money on a one-way?

He doesnt, but he also looks like the kind of kid who isnt good with tough love. Some guys have to be handled differently, whether I agree with it or not.

It's not, it's just unnecessary spending, you know?

Maybe he gets traded, who knows. Point being is he's signed, one less issue, one more option, one more asset. I dont like his game or think he is NHL ready but sometimes you have to lighten up and give a kid a break, this is his break. It's actually is put up or shutup time for Lee, no question.

What sometimes bothers me is that I can see a mile away if a guy's gonna make it or not. Sometimes you feel like cutting them a break because they're 'nice' or they add depth, but the truth of the matter is, there's has to be something about them that makes them NHLers, some facet of their game that you're interested in developing. Picard was always like that to me, I thought he blew from almost the word go, he seemed to progress a bit, then digressed to the point where we could all see the writing on the wall - for the last half a year or more - that he doesn't do anything well enough to be in the NHL IMO. He's fringe, depth, but he'll never 'make it'.

I feel the same way about Brian Lee. I hope I'm wrong.

seriously me too, i think he almost made the team. i'm not familiar with smith but judjing on the fact he hasn't been called up i think it's fair to assume there isn't a spot for him. i think there could be on another team. the lack of NHL experience will only get us a 4rth rounder TOPS.
