at first i was about to fall of my chair and start crying (no phaneuf for ottawa) then realized we still have cowen and weiroch so no need to be down, and its great that they may become this defensive team with all new goaltending but there going to be spending a lot of time in their own zone.
we play them not to far from now should be interesting.

Phaneuf is all flash and no substance. He wouldn't fit in to our dressing room. I'm thankful Murray wasn't a player here.

I predict a Kovalev hat trick playing against Stempniak and Grabovski.

Nice for him and Elisha I suppose. Update: Leafs acquire Phaneuf + 2 others for Hagman, Stajan, White and Mayers (CONFIRMED) + Giguere for Blake and Toskala (CONFIRMED) - Page 11 270956

I hadn't thought about it this way before but...
Playing the Leafs with Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie and Giguere in the lineup, but without Hagman, Staja, White and Mayers. Hmph, seems like they'll be an easier team to play against if anything.

The thing the Leafs needed the most was a better defensive coach and a Captain.
Instead, Leafs' locker room is getting worse by the day.

Leafs defence moving forward...schenn, beachemin, phaneuf, Kaberle, Komisarik, finger....I can't see why they would move Kaberle until next season depending on how the team does.

Giggy and the monster in net. Now Burke needs to shore up scoring via prospects, picks, free agency.

Money's gonna be tight though.

I should clarify something, given some of the other responses to this trade:

I DO think this makes CGY a better team THIS year. Stajan and Hagman are decent players -- solid 2nd/3rd line players who can contribute 50+ points a season. And I really like White, I do.

The problem as I see it is the long-term aspect of this deal. Phaneuf is/was among the top-5 young defencemen in the league. Half of CGY's return becomes UFA/RFA after this year. I just don't think that's a good enough return on Phaneuf, especially since you had to give up Aulie to make the deal happen.

At the beginning of next year, CGY will have Hagman and White on their roster, and maybe Stajan if they can afford him. I guess that's not horrible, after all, if you think Phaneuf is done / overrated / overpaid -- but I just can't write off a 24-year all-star this early into his career.

What if he was a complete and utter cancer to your lockeroom? A lazy, good for nothing player who frequently abandons his partner on the ice, parties all the time, drinks, is a bad influence...etc. etc. etc. At what point do you purge yourself of that?

I think that's what happened personally. Sutter brought his brother in to straighten Phaneuf around and it didn't work, this Sutter GM has little to no choice. Get him out.

Or I'm over-analyzing, but I can't wrap my head around this trade if that's not the case.

Since they basically have the same salary, would you take Phaneuf over Spezza?
Phaneuf, the way he has played the last 2 years, is not a top 2 defenseman. Paid like a N1. He is defensively average, has some questionnable positioning and leadership-wise, the Giggles dude can laugh. He hits and skates well, and has a big shot that allowed him to score a whooping 20+ goals in 2 years.
2 very average years, doesn't that sound familiar?

Calgary definitely got more depth and all-around better, as already said, for the year. Problem comes up when they have to re-sign players, but that can also be looked at as a positive - extra cap space for a big move.

Toronto gets a young defenceman who is capable of being a franchise defenceman. Yes he has faults, but he is still a good player and can get better. The Leafs problem now is scoring goals. They may have improved their chances of preventing them, but who is going to score them?

If Burke is overhauling the team, he should waive Finger, clear almost $4mil and bring up Kadri, Mitchell et al.

Go sign some more NCAA players and ex-NHLers.
