I wouldn't necessarily say it's Kuba specifically, but just the support of a reliable, veteran defenceman.

That said, I don't really see the point in upgrading on Kuba, unless we're talking in terms of Chara proportions (which we're not).

Hmmm....Chara huh.... Whitney? What are the trade deadline options? - Page 9 805406

Some believe Whitney is simply calling his shot here, raising the price and stakes for teams that he's not really interested in playing for until the team he desires puts in a call to the Hurricanes, in which case he could conceivably be moved without a contract extension and choose his new home in the summer, perhaps even signing back in Carolina. Although many think that team he is waiting on at the deadline is none other than the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Whitney might look pretty good patrolling Sidney Crosby's wing in the playoffs. He certainly fits the bill of what the Penguins need - a goal-scoring winger with clutch qualities and Stanley Cup experience.

But sources say Pittsburgh has yet to inquire about Whitney and even if the Penguins did, they are not likely to be able to offer up as much as Los Angeles was prepared to give Carolina.

LA apparently asked and was told Teubert or Voynov (or something) and a 2nd round pick. And then...The Wizardo himself told LA that they would have to re-sign him to a 3-year contract.

How about...hmmm.... Thinking....uh...Diddle no?

Dreger was asked today who he though would be going from Carolina - and he said absolutely EVERYONE besides Staal and Ward. Corvo, Whitney, Cullen. Everyone's for sale.

Darren Dreger: (The guys everyone's talking about) and Walker, A. Ward, Alberts, Yelle, Wallin, Legace. The Carolina Hurricanes are rebuilding with Eric Staal, Cam Ward, and potentially the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to lead the construction. A number of teams have interest in the players both you and I have identified. I know at least one team is prepared to give up a first rounder and a prospect for Whitney.

I'll give you an update:

He'll only accept a trade to the Pens right now. And the Pens know. So...yeah, mid-tiered prospect and a 2nd rounder is my official guess.

That's too much. Ray Whitney is nice and all but he's 37 and a rental player. I can't understand the justification of a second round pick for a team that's been dealing picks away the last couple of years for rentals.

Man, it's not only the picks etc., it's the money/term/committment on a pretty old guy. Unless he's signing for the league minimum a three year extension is crazy talk. He wanted LA to sign off on an extension before he waived his NTC.

This is a dude who will be 38 at year's end. Loony Can't do it Mr.Wizard, can't do it...

I'm sure he's the odd-man out in Chicago. Unless they can deal Soupy, I guess.

Is Sharp still a $4M+ player? He was on the Hawks 3rd/4th lines during the playoffs, and I have no idea where he's been playing this year nor how many points he is even capable of putting up anymore.

I think Ottawa has to focus on one thing at a time, like re-signing Volcheknov or moving him, before making any other moves for contractually committed players.
