1.3 I feel is a bargain for this guy, and we have him for 2 more years I believe, he is one of those guys too you hate to play against, but love to have him on your team. That agitation factor is priceless sometimes.

Lets be honest. We need to dump Kelly and Schubert... if we can do that we'll be golden

Indeed. But... "no takers" so far...

since buyout doesn't seem to be an option, the only thing Murray could do is put them both on waivers, see if someone picks them up, if not, I guess they would be bingo bound.

I think Kelly would be a great 4th line guy but at 2.1 mil its just a little ridiculous to have him, Neil, and Ruutu making up a 5 million dollar 4th line. If we are under the cap then it's really no big deal, but going forward into next year having that salary off the books could very well get The Sens another nice asset.

Schubert is getting waived, it's coming, maybe even this weekend.

That money we are paying Kelly should go to re-upping A Train next season and start to stack the most rediculous blueline in the league.

Kuba/Karlsson
A Train/Phillips
Lee or Wiercoich(depending on what he decides)/Cowen
Carkner

Tell me that's not the deepest and most tallented blueline in The NHL going forward.

I don't think you put Kelly on waivers. Schubert, yes, but not Kelly -- for all kinds of reasons independent of cap hit, salary, etc., etc. You just don't do it to that guy.

My guess is we waive/demote Schubert, and send down Smith, Lee, and Carkner -- for now. That leaves us with 23 players, including an injured Winchester.

When Wincester comes back, tho', we have decisions to make, for sure. And, yeah, it would all centre around moving Kelly. He doesn't fit into our top 9 anymore, and he's not a 4th liner. Good player who just doesn't fit our team's needs anymore.

And in spite of what Spector is saying (surprise, surprise), I don't think Kelly is untradeable. We're not going to get a good return or anything (a 3rd? 4th?), but teams are always looking for steady, reliable players who can PK and play good defensive hockey. To me, the kind of money handed out to guys like Pahlsson, Moen, Madden, etc. in what was a very fiscally conservative spending season proves that. Tell me that Kelly doesn't instantly make a team like, oh, ATL more defensively sound and more effective on the PK. Instantly.

I agree on that one, there is no way we can let A-Train walk away from this team, he is a soldier on our blueline and still has many years ahead of him.

If you move Kelly, absolutely not. I am all for resigning A train but a bad season or a lack of funds, he will be on the move.

Agreed on A-Train. By the time Weircioch and Cowen have solidified roster spots A-Train will be the heir to Phillips in terms of being that steady stay at home D-man Veteran to mentor the younglings.

Phillips will be a solid D man until he is 40 (give or take) he has got a while to go for sure. A Train, well, the bumps and brusies might catch up after a while.

True enough about Phillips N4L but I think Phillips will be a 6th/7th D man by that time don't you?

Could be, but Cowen and Karlsson will be the best 1-2 in the league so... Phillips will help along with the younger guys like Wierchoich, Wideman, and who ever else may be drafted.

that's exactly what we will need Big Rig for at that time, wouldn't be surprised he lasts as long as Chelios did, but still be effective.

Yeah, let's look at who has been paired with Phillips in the last while:

Chara - no comment needed
Volchenkov - his breakout season came when this move happened (coincidence?)
Lee - he never looked so good as the few times he was paired with Phillips

From Lyle Richardson at SpectorsHockey.net today:

http://www.spectorshockey.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=576:no-deals-for-senators&catid=5:trade-rumors&Itemid=4

Senators GM Bryan Murray unable to find any takers for salary dumping trades. Read on for the details.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators GM Bryan Murray hasn't been able to find any takers as he attempted this week to find takers for some of his extra players. It was believed Murray was shopping Christoph Schubert and was gauging interest in defenseman Alexandre Picard, noting the Columbus Blue Jackets were seeking defensive help. Garrioch suggests veteran forward Chris Kelly and Shean Donovan might also be on the outs.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlan reports Kelly's numbers from last season weren't far off from his previous seasons and was criticized not for his ability but for the four-year, $8.5 million contract he signed with the club in 2008.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Blue Jackets are specifically seeking a puck-moving defenseman and may not have interest in Picard, particularly since they're giving Martin Skoula a tryout. Kelly's salary will likely make him almost impossible to move and Murray probably won't have him riding the buses. Most likely Schubert and Picard will be placed on waivers and probably demoted.
