Okay...maybe there's logic in this, maybe not. It's difficult to say - I certainly would never have given up 2 1sts, a 2nd and 5.4 million in cap space for Kessel - I like him, he's a fun player with loads of skill, but I'm sure as heck not losing those picks.
On the flip side, there's a lot of talk about the next 2 drafts being very shallow. The Leafs wouldn't have been in a position for a top 5 pick IMO. Some people write them off so quickly and that's a hell of a mistake - their D is solid and deep. It's not the most offensive, but it'll really make opposing teams forwards think twice about making pretty little plays. I've always liked Toskala as well. Of course he struggled last year, but he needed surgery badly.
So, the pick is probably middle of the pack - a 13th - 16th overall and there's really no guarantee that there's going to be solid talent in that range. The year after, Kadri, Bozak, Hansen and now Kessel are a older, wiser and there's still some money to think about subtracting a D-man and dipping into the free agent pool for another UFA forward. Roll the dice on Toskala and Gustafsson, then if it doesn't work this year, sign a big name next summer. So the next pick is in the late teens - again, so far there's no signs it'll be a good draft.
So a mid-1st round pick, a mid to late first round pick and a mid-second round pick for Kessel and a low 3rd round pick.
Nope...still doesn't make sense.... :^^^^:
I tried to figure it out Burke.
