Camp cuts and other notes

nvm The citizen had their number of campers wrong (or the cuts to hoffman, henessy, et al happened after publication). There are only 28 left in camp. Here were the lines from today's practice, via SC via TSN:

These were the lines from practice this morning...

Michalek - Spezza - Alfredsson
Foligno - Shannon - Kovalev
Cheechoo - Regin - Fisher
Ruutu - Neil - Kelly
Donovan - Z Smith - Schubert

Phillips - Volchenkov
Kuba - Karlsson
Carkner - Campoli
Picard - Lee
Cowen

So Cheechoo has already been bumped from the 2nd line

Yeah yeah---lines change all the time---but that should be a pretty clear sign that he isn't being considered for 1st line duty.

The D-pairings are really interesting Imo. I had assumed Picard had the inside track to the 3rd pairing, but maybe not

Lee looks to be playing himself off the team. He really needs to play better or the Sens are going to need to trade him out of town. He still has some value but its slipping every day.

A trade is unlikely for Lee. He'll be sent to Bingo.

I wonder what a package of Picar, Kelly or Campoli, Kelly could bring in back? Any thoughts?

Not much right now, teams are going to be reluctant to make trades until the season gets going. When it comes to trading defensemen anyway I'd like to see Schubert sent packing.

According to that, donovan, shubert, and kelly (3.6 million total) seem to be proving themselves spare parts. Trade them for anything and start the season with almost 5 mill in cap space. At the trade deadline we could be buyers!!

It would have to be something sexy. I wouldn't dump them both for cap room that's for sure. What are you looking for? A better D Man?

if we get rid of schubert kelly and donovan, we could sign sundin. i think he would be an alright 2nd line centre.

A gritty defender seems to be the top priority. That or prospects/picks I'd think.

Still though, that defenseman would only be a band aid, Carkner is looking ready to make the jump next season, and be a hell of a call up this one.

Why he'd trade for Gomez and let Kovalev walk is mind boggling to say the least.

well kovalev is frustrating player b/c he is good when he wants to be good but he doesn't want to play every game--i agree--gomez 7m a year for him--i got a bunch of smurfs for forwards--i'll trade gainey for BM any day of the week--the habs won't make the playoffs--i can't stand gainey

I dunno if that can be called a "3rd line" demotion...it seems like we're going to have a 1st line and then 2a and a 2b. What made us dangerous 3 years back was that we could roll 4 lines....this looks like we may be able to do that again.

the big but really positive question we have is how Murray deals with the "5th line" and the 4th set of Dmen! have we ever had so much depth? IF we run into injury problems during the year, we'll still be in pretty good shape!

He made an error not making sure the Rangers took back considerable salary in the Gomez deal IMO. Should have been Higgins, Hamrlik for Gomez, Girardi - something like that where the sting of the Gomez contract is levied a bit.

Gomez is a fantastic player - IMO - he'll really surprised you, speed, great passer, can snipe when he decides to shoot. I already really like what I'm seeing from Gionta as well. Everyone knew he was good, but he had fallen off like Cheechoo had (maybe not as bad), but he's got one thing Cheechoo doesn't have: blazing speed. I'm not a fan of the Habs, but I'm interested to see how Gomez and Gionta click in the first 5 games of the year - which are on the road I believe and very important for the Habs season. Cammelleri is pretty close to elite as well - let's say Gainey gave up Kovalev to sign Camm (he did, don't let him fool anyone), that's a pretty fair trade off IMO. Camm is younger and should be able to score more than Kovalev, but obviously Kovalev brings other things to the table.

Plekanec has the 2nd line center will be where the Habs fail or succeed - and the supporting cast of forwards for that matter. Spacek is a replacement for Schneider, Mara and Gill replace Komisarek (maybe).

Price had better be sharp - and if not, Halak will take over the team's G.

Barely in the playoffs? Or barely out? Shouldn't be any grey area for the Habs this season - I'm intrigued. :handsup:
