OK, so checking the stats, this is at 744 (745 now) posts. The EJ Hradek....Dany Heatley thread went to 990 (which seems to be the cut-off) and then proceeded to go to 905 when it re-opened.

So, we've got some work to do if we ever want to top that one.

Undoubtedly, though, the Dany Heatley trade demand is by far and away the most post-producing event in this site's history.

Holy Dung, that's ridiculous. Ridiculous.

Now that I see the numbers though, I can see where Warrren would have got his numbers. If we assume that his definition of "staying below the cap" is being 1.5 below for flexibility and if we assume he's still got Lee in his lineup; there's your 2.8.

I just assumed Warren was going with a 24-man roster (!), with Lee and Regin and Bass in the line-up. Those three add up to close to the $2.8 mil figure he's citing.

In any event, leaving cap space is a discretionary thing (and a wise decision, I might add), but it's not mandatory. That's not to say we won't create that space (we absolutely will), but to say we "have" to clear that space is not entirely truthful, either.

Anyway, I'd say the Sens need to clear a minimum of $1.6 mil to be where they want to be, and comfortably.

Does this $1.6 include Smith on ltir should he be heading there?

If Smith were on LTIR for about 3/5ths of the season, then, technically, we'd be fine: we'd have about $1.6 (about 3/5ths of Smith's salary) in cap space and a 20-man roster (with Schubert as the 6th D). If you call up Lee, which I think would happen for sure if Smith doesn't play, however, then you have to move a salary -- starting with at least Schubert's, if not more.

Personally, tho', I think we might see one, slightly larger salary move -- something like Kelly's or Smith's, if he's healthy. At some point, moving guys with lower salaries (Picard, Donovan, etc.) to make cap space makes zero sense, as the kids coming up to replace them make about the same kind of money.

The less cap space you have at the start of the year, the more of a gamble you're taking. Look what happened to CLG this year, and EDM the year before that: towards the end of the season, they actually had to ice teams with less than 20 players. Those injury expenses can really add up.

And don't forget about Bobby Ryan last year with Anaheim. The only reason he was down in the AHL at the start of last year was Cap space. Once they could fit his salary on the books, he was up with the big club.

Rooney is spot on again.

kudos to our cap master once again, seems like the cap strain has gone down a bit, last time I checked cap geek it was like 1.2 million that the Sens were over the cap, what changed there? Maybe I was dreaming as well, that could explain it.

Agreed. Injury replacement costs don't seem like much, but if you have to replace 100-200 man games.....yikes.

164 man games lost to injury would cost under a million at league minimum. Of course guys that come up are probably on a contact getting paid around $800K or more.

Thank you, sir -- although you may be unhappy to hear that while I'm mentally prepared for Heatley to return to the Senators, I (unlike you) still think the odds favour him getting traded before the season starts.

It will take a major PR overhaul of epic proportions to fix this situation--within the organization, in the locker room, and with the fans. Given Heatley's silence and reticence, I'm not sure it's coming. Moreover, all GMs, BM included, tend to leave things to the last minute. Mez got traded on a sleepy Sunday or Monday night late in August, I believe, when there was little ahead of time to prepare us for that eventuality or to tip is off. I still think there's a good chance something similar happens here with Heatley.

Let's just hope Murray gets the right draft pick this time. I don't want to give up Hedman again. Sad

Perhaps but Heatley compared to Meszaros in terms of pre-trade coverage is like the Michael Jackson memorial compared to the passing of a goldfish in kanata...

Hey man, to each their own. One question though, how the heck do you remember stuff like the Meszaros trade being on a lazy Sunday. Kudos to you again. :___:

Trust me, I am prepared to eat some humble pie should Heatley get traded before opening night.

The PR campaign has already started of sorts as players as of 2 weeks ago have started to welcome him back to the team. Neil had a softer tone to his last public statement as did someone else, but the latters name escapes me right now.

However, Heatley will play for the Sens this season and I expect nothing more than for you to change your avatar to a smiling picture of Heatley for the whole season. Deal? Or are you chicken? Laughing3

He won't have a choice if he shows up at the camp. There will be no dodging the barrage of questions. He's going to have to speak sooner or later, and now that it's looking more and more likely that he's going to return to Ottawa, cue the damage control.

I suppose it depends on his reasons. Honesty is probably the way to go. If he's unhappy with Clouston and his role, then say so. But he ought to apologize to the fans and teammates for the incredible distraction.

I doubt there will be much sympathy no matter what he says though....
