Really? $2-million per season for a guy who can't score, can't fight, can't skate and can't play a role. Wonderful.

Maple Leafs Lite this team is becoming.

I would really like you to stand in front of Chris Neil and tell him that to his face. It's damn easy to be an anonymous internet coward. Give me a damn break.

I can live with it because it's a guy that we probably are a lot better off with, but in the end these 300Ks add up. 500K here, 750K on Fisher, 300K on Kelly, 1.5 million on Fat Penner.

What's that, like 3.5 million right there?

I hope this all works out. I really do. FingersCrossed

It's very true, penny pinching can make a huge difference. Fisher, Kelly, Neil are all over paid... in fact, everyone is, but compared to market value, those guys all are. We overpaid out of respect - we like these guys (well BM does) and rewards them for it.

Chris Neil is the best fighter on this team and he plays his role quite good I would say. I don`t understand why you said that.

And what role is it that he plays? Scores? Kills penalties? Checking line player? Shutdown forward? What exactly does he contribute apart from the occasional big hit?

Why not sign Brashear for $1.5-1.75 million per season, he's a much better fighter than Neil and he uses his size on guys when he's hitting them and when he's cycling the puck in the offensive zone. And both guys are just as liable defensively.

NObody really had any specific role last year, that`s more a coach`s fault than Chris Neil's. <
We have to go back to taht Stanley Cup run to evaluate this team's potential, and Chris Neil and Fisher were playing a major role physically/defensively (forecheking and all the Dung) against Pittsburg, NJ and Buffalo.

Players leaving a team and blossoming elsewhere are not coincidence.

There's basically the final piece. Minny's out now, so that leaves Edmonton and maybe LA and SJ to take a final kick at this.

ya, LA has lost out on both Gabo and Havlat which they were both in on. I honestly think they might go back to heatley cause they need that big scoring force up front.

He's a team first guy, who hits and gives it his all every shift, and he's passionate. He's not worth the $2M, but at least we are only overpaying him by $400K. He is after all only 2 seasons removed from a 28 point season. And he'll fight anyone. Kind of hoping we reunite him with ruutu and bass for that energy line we had during the preseason of last year.

One thing I will say is that if there was ever a guy I would expect to raise his game in after signing a long-term deal, this is the guy.

Other players get a 4 year deal and take the next 3 years off... I don't expect that to happen here.

What a loaded statement. After the last two seasons this guy has had, how could he in fact get worse? Of course, after the season everyone is gonna be saying "Oh my God, he was so worth the money, he put up ~10 goals and ~10 assists", well yeah he improved, there was nothing less he could do after last season.

But anyways, I seem to be the only one of the opinion that $2 million is too much for Chris Neil...especially when a guy like Brashear signs for $1.4 million.

I'm pretty sure I said in the very next post that it was too much money. I'm also pretty sure that most of the posts in this thread are condemning this signing.

Maybe I am retarded; we can't expect everybody to be as smart as you are now can we? You said that Chris Neil can't fight and I responded that I'd love you to say that to his face; if you think he can't fight then I figured you thought you could do better. As far as not playing his role, I again disagree, he's certainly not a high scoring forward but his role consists of :

- hitting and he's done that quite well (he ranked 12 in the league in 07/08, 1st in 06/07 and 4th in 05/06).
- fighting (14 fights in 08/09: 5 wins, 4 draws , 9 in 07/08: 4 wins, 2 draw, 8 in 06/07: 5 wins, 2 draws)

He's an energy forward; he gets his teammates going and he's an awesome (by all accounts) team guy.

Is he overpaid ? Maybe; hell, every NHL player is overpaid. The minimum salary in the NHL is more than most MD's (and specialists) can make but he's a great character guy; a great community guy and a great team guy.

He turned down about 1.2M$ to play in Ottawa

I want him on my team and I hope he can kick Heatley's a$$ when they meet next Wink

Cheers!

I don't think he does, and I'm one who likes the signing, albeit do believe a couple hundred thousand dollars too much.

I don't necessarily agree with PKC saying that Neil can't fight, but I do trust when he says this he means it in a relative sense; relative to how other hockey payers fight. That's like making a statement that the Leafs suck, and then someone else saying that they can beat you at hockey. Everything is relative, and that's why TheAvatar's statement was a tad bit nonsensical.

That being said, I don't condone PKC calling him 'retarded', but I do understand the outrage.

Perhaps some perspective then:

Colton Orr $1 million
David Koci $575,000
Ian Laperriere $1.17 million
Michael Rupp $825,000
Donald Brashear $1.4 million
Cody McLeod $1.03 million

And those are just the comparables in tough guys that can play a regular shift. What about the vets that signed for the same dollar amount?

Doug Weight
Steven Reinprecht
Keith Tkachuk
Bill Guerin

I think I can personally say I'd have anyone I just mentioned over Chris Neil at the salaries they signed. Especially Laperriere. Easily the closest comparable to Neil and look at the price difference.

Penner isn't as bad as everyone makes him out to be... I wonder if Murray intends on reuniting him with Shannon. When they played together for Portland of the AHL, Penner finished the season with 84 points in 57 games... It's only the AHL, but those are impressive numbers, even for that league.

I was happy to see that he was signed. My gut clenched when I saw the terms. Wow, 2 million a year. That's a lot of coin.

Still, I can't help but smile, especially with all this Heatley Dung, we just signed a guy who geniunely wants to be here, and will bring an infectious attitude to the dressing room, where one is sorely lacking.

So welcome back Neiler, but boy, you better bring it next season!
