I actually once told Kevin that "alot" is actually two words, not one. He rolled right along -- but at least I wasn't threatened with being banned or worse. When he calls himself a "sports writer" I'm not sure which of the two words in the title to get more upset about.

Is it that hard to write a coherent sentence when you're getting paid to do it??

Anyways, its good to know that the organization is taking good care of the details for our affiliate.

What? It's perfectly reasonable to change the subject of a sentence part way through without using any punctuation or other signposts. Facepalm

I think one of the worst aspects of the blogger world is that far too many people who don't know how to use their native language are getting their words printed (albeit electronically).
To make matters worse, it's what the kids are reading these days. Books? Library? What are those? TO THE WEB! They read poorly written, grammatically mutilated blogs and think it's proper English.

Our future is in their hands.

Sad, really.

It's a classic "dangling modifier," actually, framed around an awkward slippage in the use of the word "you."

I can barely stand to read newspapers. Most writers are semi-literate. Major grammatical errors like the one above (and comma splices, especially) are rampant in mainstream news writing.

Having started my academic career in journalism, I certainly get it. They're not made to study grammar in anything like a systematic way. The all-important lesson of 1st year was "you're writing for an audience with a grade 10 education. Simplify. No 3-syllable words." I'm not kidding.

If they manage to make it to university, and my classroom, then they are in my hands. And trust me, I'm a hard taskmaster. You will dream in grammatically correct sentences. You will learn to write whether you want to or not. Smile

well I suppose they have to appeal to the greatest audience, and some people that read the paper can barely breathe and walk at the same time, usually they are looking for the comics though.

You can appeal to an audience without making grammatical mistakes. I can see Rooney's point about using simpler words, but correct grammar rarely makes a sentence more difficult to read.

Aargh, there are so many things that drive me bonkers:

  • it's when it should be its (hint: replace "it's" with "it is" and see if it still makes sense
  • incorrect use of "you and me" or "you an I" (hint: replace "you and me" with "us" or "you and I" with "we")
  • alot
  • anyways
I'd better stop before I get too far.
Oh, on-topic, Dany is still a Senator.

Keep it to the text messaging world, I'm fine with that... but it seems to be used everywhere these days.

Heatley seen, but not heard

A definite maybe.
That‘s been Dany Heatley‘s response to a few questions as of late.
The obvious being Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray asking him to waive his no-trade clause to join the Edmonton Oilers in late June, a deal that would have landed the Senators a package of forwards Dustin Penner and Andrew Cogliano as well as defenceman Ladislav Smid in return.
Heatley, who requested a trade out of the nation‘s capital the previous week, had until midnight on July 1 to accept or refuse the trade, but instead let the deadline pass without comment.
Fast forward a few weeks, and Heatley still isn‘t talking.
Not to teammates, at least not captain Daniel Alfredsson, and not to the media.
Not by phone and not in person.
Several calls from media to the Senators sniper have gone unanswered, with messages not returned.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and, in this case, a Tuesday afternoon visit to Heatley‘s
off-season home on Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna.
A long and winding road to get there – not knowing whether he‘d be home or whether he‘d agree to an interview – it was certainly worth a shot.
Upon arriving, the back gate was open and seemingly welcoming. A portable basketball net was visible from the top of a downhill driveway, and a nice ski boat was docked just feet from the front yard. Fittingly, the 28-year-old former 50-goal scorer answered the door of his multi-million-dollar pad adorned in board shorts, a golf shirt and sunglasses.
Then came the questions: Dany, I‘m so and so from The Daily Courier, was hoping I could shoot the breeze on some hockey stuff with you?
“Not right now, man. Sorry, I‘m just about to take off, actually,” said Heatley, pleasant but clearly surprised to see a reporter standing there.
OK, fair enough, could we set something up for later on, maybe later in the week or next week?
“You know what, I‘ll take your card and I‘ll give you a call or have someone give you a call. We‘ll be in touch.”
And so ended a rather anticlimactic encounter.
It didn‘t end with a flat out no, but by no means was it a guaranteed yes. More like a definite maybe, a response Steve Tambellini and the Oilers can relate to.
That proposed deal isn‘t dead, according to various reports, nor is this interview.
Or is it? Stay tuned.

A journalist has managed to write a story about absolutely nothing. Holy Dung...are they desperate for word counts to fill their paper in Kelwona? What a load of garbage.
