How can you not pick up the captain's call though? It's just mind boggling. Even just communicating your reasons to the players would go a long, long way way to bridging the gap. He's a grown man for god sakes. He should know that the ostrich technique doesn't work.
It is mind boggling... he should have answered Alfie's call even if he just said things were complicated and he was not ready to talk about it. At least take his call for crying out loud.

I think Heatley is just finally showing his true colors. He's doing this because he wants no part of the Sens organization anymore. In his mind he has nothing to say to Alfie, he's made his trade public and it's not open to discussion.

It just goes to show what kind of player we had on the team all this time.

My wife has met quite a few hockey players, and from her stories I think a quite a lot of fans would be shocked at how some of the players they idolize really are. I know I was.

Reading over what you guys have written makes me pissed all over again. As if Melnyk isn't a great owner and a true fan of the game, does Dany think this doesn't hurt him deeply as a fan and human being as well. Nevermind all the other damage he's causing, that's a big one IMO.

The anger will linger for some time I think. Will we get some sort of closure if Heatley is dealt and he speaks out? I don't know. Maybe. But, he'll never be viewed the same by me, that's for sure.

Never viewed the same by me either Shabbs. I used to LOVE Dany Heatley. One of my favourite players in the game. Last year, the shine began to wear off when he didn't play hard all year. Now, I can't stand him. I don't care that he has a sniper shot, he's not an all-round player and what he's done will make me dislike him forever.

I think once it comes out that you are a "prick", fans will turn on a player very quickly. Character, work ethic, team commitment and professionalism can weather poor performance (Fisher is a good example)... but being a prick will get you no love no matter how many points you put up.

Perception is reality, and unless you know the players personally, what we see (in the press) is what we get.

That would give him good reasons not to get worked up...over anything.

There's a really good book by Stan Fischler, "Slapshot!" which gives you some first hand insights into the character--or lack of it--of pro hockey players.

It's available on Amazon or Alibris.

The chapter "Con Men and Sh!t Merchants" specifically deals with some famous names whose behaviour might shock you.

IMHO Heatley will take his sweet time deciding what he does next. If the Sens ask him to come back, he may even dictate his own set of terms.

You think you hate him now? You might just take that up a notch before long.

I'm not a lawyer or anything, but I'm pretty sure thats when he gives back the 4M dollars and spends a considerable portion of that remaining 10M on legal expenses. Like I said when this talk of a legal battle all came up: Its a lot easier for a billionaire to weather the financial burden of a legal battle than it is for a millionaire.

If he holds out and is suspended... does the $4M come back to the Sens since it's essentially part of next season's pay?

I'm curious about that.

You'd better believe it has to. He'll fight it, of course.

I highly doubt it ever comes to that... but it would be interesting... in a sick kind of way. We don't need another Yashin incident.

And sooner or later, he will want to play to "earn" his money. At that point, the team could recover that money by essentially garnishing his future pay! DancingBanana

Regardless, Ottawa had to get this announcement done now since we are in the middle of July without a coach in Bingo and add to the fact that the Bingo Sens Annual Open House is on Saturday from 11-3.....if you were one of the 2,000 season ticket holders showing up on Saturday and still had no head coach announced you would look pretty bad as an organization.

Is it that hard to write a coherent sentence when you're getting paid to do it??

Anyways, its good to know that the organization is taking good care of the details for our affiliate.

How many name changes has this thread gone through? Are we going to see "Fall Dany Heatley hits" at some point, or will it get locked down before we get there?

What? It's perfectly reasonable to change the subject of a sentence part way through without using any punctuation or other signposts. Facepalm

I think one of the worst aspects of the blogger world is that far too many people who don't know how to use their native language are getting their words printed (albeit electronically).

I actually once told Kevin that "alot" is actually two words, not one. He rolled right along -- but at least I wasn't threatened with being banned or worse. When he calls himself a "sports writer" I'm not sure which of the two words in the title to get more upset about.

To make matters worse, it's what the kids are reading these days. Books? Library? What are those? TO THE WEB! They read poorly written, grammatically mutilated blogs and think it's proper English.

Our future is in their hands.

Sad, really.

It's a classic "dangling modifier," actually, framed around an awkward slippage in the use of the word "you."

I can barely stand to read newspapers. Most writers are semi-literate. Major grammatical errors like the one above (and comma splices, especially) are rampant in mainstream news writing.

Having started my academic career in journalism, I certainly get it. They're not made to study grammar in anything like a systematic way. The all-important lesson of 1st year was "you're writing for an audience with a grade 10 education. Simplify. No 3-syllable words." I'm not kidding.
