If we had gotten Tampa's first rounder then this would look like another Yashin for Chara and Spezza trade. Just ridiculous if you think about it.

Too bad we didn't but I'm sure Murray tried and they declined.

Has this been gnawing at anyone else? Tampa Bay thought they were gonna be the cat's meow this year, I'm surprised they couldn't be persuaded into giving up their 1st instead of SJ's.

Stop over valueing the 1st rounder.

No, I meant Tampa Bay's first rounder.

If we had gotten Tampa's first rounder in the deal, we could hypothetically have walked away from the draft with Hedman AND Paajarv-Svensson.

Maybe, but the team wasnt planning on tanking this year.

Yeah but it was a safe bet that Tampa would.

I hadn't really thought about it until now. What a steal that would have been. If only we could go back in time.

^ Take me all the way back to where the Kings traded Visnovsky so I could trump the Oilers deal.

Guys come on. The worst move Murray's made wasn't a move at all, it's a huge lack thereof. He missed out on the Boyle sweepstakes, and he could have had him. Boyle would LOVE to be here, and who could honestly say we wouldn't love to have him here over just about any Dman in the league (I think I'd put him behind only Phaneuf, Weber, Green, and maybe JBo).

But it's not just Boyle, Murray's neglected to address our issues at the back end, and put too much of a reliance on up and coming talent (Brian Lee, Brendan Bell, Alex Picard, etc).

This is by far the worst thing he has been responsible for. Not the trades he HAS made.

So, you still needed players back, otherwise he could have just traded him for a their 1st, 2nd, and maybe a 2nd in 2010 too. That is what they were willing to give up anyways.

For me, the Hartsburg hiring was the biggest mistake. It was clear from day 1 that he was not the guy. When Paddock was hired, the team came off of the Cup run and it made sense to have stability.

Boyle was a major mistake to say the least. Diddler...how many times is that gonna fall into your lap?

If I remember correctly. Wasn't Tampa willing to to throw an offer sheet at Meszaros? But they didn't have a 2nd round pick or something? That offer sheet, had it passed, would have given us their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks in this draft. Damn Tampa.....WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE THAT PICK!!!!

Yeah it was their 3rd Pittsburgh had it... I agree those picks could have been a better option..

Yup, that would have been ideal in hindsight.

Ideal?

How about Mez for Boyle straight up? That's ideal. Sad

Maybe, but Boyle was already gone and they were still trying to sign Mez.

Again, people just bi tch about this stuf because they can.
I think Murray has done a good job overall in Ottawa, and the rebuild has just started.

I'm on board with Murray's re-tooling. I like what he's done. If there was a chance to trade Mez for Boyle, I would have been all over it though.

Why bother trying to re-sign Mez when you can just turn him into Danny Boyle?

Murray was approached by TB with Mez still trying to come to terms. The difference in price was 2.7 million (we all knew Mez would get 4), why not just get 'er done. It's pretty obvious that TB wanted Mez enough to part with Boyle for him.

It's not ****ing, it's a odd scenario.

Boyle coming off a huge injury, with a 6 years term, at 32 years old, at 6.6 a year with an NTC... thats a huge risk.

I'm with you N4.. I like what Murray's done, and by no means do I think he should be relieved of his duties.

However, if the question is Bryan Murray's worst move... I don't think he's had any really bad ones, to be honest... That's why I picked the move he didn't make- better preparing our back end for THIS year.

I'm really surprised people haven't mentioned how Boyle would have handicapped our salary situation..

In my opinion, it's a no brainer... you deal with salary when you need to. If Boyle was on this team right now, I can almost guarantee you that Spezza and everyone else would be playing a thousand times better than they have all year. When the time comes that we need to dump cap, one of the two of them will have to go- and guess what, the packages put together for either of them would be SOOO much better than they are right now.

This is the only thing I fault Murray for.
