I disagree. I think he takes a discount at $10-11 to stay here.

Hey guys,

Been a while since I've posted...trying to keep a low profile.  Couple of things...

Karlsson will not take a discount to stay here.....there was a time when he would have, but that has long since past.  Trading his good friend Zibby, then letting Methot go (and to further tick him off have LVK not even want him and trade him to Dallas for something the Sens could have matched), and now Alfie having more of a desire to be with his family than continue in the Sens front office.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes right now that has the potential to cause huge issues with this Organization, and Dorion is doing his best to keep it all together with Scotch Tape and Glue sticks.   Unless there is a major change, Karlsson will test the UFA market.

A couple of things from what I have heard. He wasn't huge friends with Zibby. I have friends who are good friends with Zibby and Karlsson was never really part of the picture.

Ottawa couldn't match what DAL offered, so that shouldn't be a factor here at all. By all accounts, they needed Ottawa's 1st.

But further to my post, I don't think $11M is a discount for Karlsson anyway. It's more fair value than anything else.

I don't see Karlsson going anywhere else.

Dzingel asking for $1.95M, Sens countering with $1M. Pretty close to a 15/30 player. I'm afraid the ask isn't outrageous, but given how it's gone the last little while the arbitrator will probably go with around $1.4M.

Like I said, 1 year around 1.5 mill

I think it's pretty presumptuous to say he would test the FA market. Im sure karlsson sees the value in becoming a legacy player in Ottawa. Besides the part that we are becoming an even better team.

That said I think it will take market value to sign him. 8 years at anything between 10-12.

What's the value of being a legacy player in Ottawa? I guess he can look at the fan support Alfie gets but even then Alfie left...

Why not play in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, etc where you can be a legacy player, live in an incredible city, and not deal with a cheap owner. He has the opportunity to play wherever he wants and make whatever he wants. 10 year, $120M is likely going to be his next contract. Front-loaded as well.

Ottawa won't feel the impact since Phaneuf will be gone by that point (trade). You're essentially paying Karlsson to be Karlsson and Phaneuf which is still worth it IMO. I expect Ottawa to shed some salary over the next 2-3 years (Brassard, Smith, MacArthur) and replace with prospects. If they can move Ryan I expect they will do that as well.

He's Swedish. They don't thrive for the big bucks or the lavish lifestyle. He's from a small town. Most good Swedes stick around on the team that drafted them, either forever or for a very long time. I don't think Karlsson would want to play in a bigger market like LA or New York.

Also he can't sign a 10 year deal. And Dallas isn't comparable to New York or LA. No different than Ottawa expect for terrible hot weather.

The whole "front-loaded" contract thing will be very important given the pending lockout in a couple more seasons. Will Eugene be willing and able to front-load Karlsson's contract, ensuring EK gets a ton of money up front? It seems that the norm here lately is to gradually escalate salary over the course of a contract, not to front-load it.

Anyway, only Karlsson knows what the future holds at this point. We're a year away from truly knowing where this is heading, but I really hope he just gets resigned in July 2018 and it doesn't become a Stamkos-like situation.

You don't think Henrik Lundqvist loves playing in New York? And I do agree that Swedes tend to be very loyal to the organizations that drafted them. I can't really think of a star player that has left in recent years.

What I think will incentivize Karlsson to stay is a commitment for the Sens to win a cup. IMO, they should have made a splash this off-season and brought in a big name (similar to what NYI did with Eberle). But I can't comment on his relationships with his teammates so I am not sure what sort of impact that would even have on him.

I'd imagine a big signing bonus would be part of his contract. Not sure Melnyk would like that but without Karlsson the value of his franchise takes a huge hit so he's the best investment Melnyk could make. Losing Karlsson would cause an uproar in a city whose fan support is already being questioned.

Even Crazy Ol' Eugene must understand the value of Karlsson.

I don't think Karlsson fits the mold of the old-school loyal Swede.

There's a bunch of factors playing into Karlsson remaining a Senator, and one of the biggest might be the team's on-ice performance this coming season.

Lundqvist plays in NY because he was drafted by them.

On-ice performance will be secondary to money. It's always just about money and family. It's a job, winning doesn't really matter as much as people think. Karlsson won't leave, his family is deeply rooted in Ottawa.

I think every player is different in what they value. For many years now, we've seen free agents leave lots of money on the table to sign one-year deals with contenders. Karlsson is a bit of a different case here though, given that he is going to sign a 7 or 8 years contract at over $10M. Don't underestimate his desire to win though...he is ridiculously competitive.

Karlsson's wife's family is rooted in Ottawa. I have a feeling that he's a man who runs the show in his house, so I'm not sure how much pull his wife will have here. No way to know for sure.

How does Karlsson feel about Eugene? We don't know.

Like I have said, there's a bunch of factors at play here. Only Karlsson knows how important each one is to him.

Ya apparently his wife is pretty rich too and probably doesn't need to work either so it's possible she doesn't really care where she lives...

Im going to make the assumption that karlsson feels more or less like everyone feels about Melnyk. He's taken jabs at ownership's reluctance to spend to improve the team and that it may become a factor as we reach a contract decision. I agree that securing another top forward this off season maybe via trade should have been a priority for many reasons including making Karlsson feel like we are trying to compete. But summer isn't done.

Im gonna also think that it doesn't likely matter so much to his immediate family where they live. That 8th year the sens can offer him on a contract likely has more weight .

Trade coming? We may have the most expensive 3rd and 4th lines in the NHL and you don't healthy scratch anyone in the bottom six except maybe for Dzingel but at a $1.8M AAV on a two-year deal it's pretty hard to justify. Definitely no room for White or any other prospect on a permanent basis.

Agreed. A trade seems to be in order. Dzingel, White, Hoffman, Stone, Turris, Pageau should be the core of this team and should start to get the lion's share of minutes. Too many pricey bottom six guys.
