What I don't like from a lot of the analytics nerds is that they just throw stats out with little interpretation. It's like "LOOK AT WIERCIOCH'S CORSI, HE SHOULD ALWAYS PLAY WITH KARLSSON"...instead of relating it to other things like quality of opposition, etc. And then you can watch Wiercioch get pushed off the puck more easily than, say, Cowen does, but this doesn't really show up in analytics if it's not directly linked to something else......anyway, all that to say, they have a long way to go.
But for all those times he gets pushed, there are many others where he gets the puck out of his zone with a good pass. Karlsson used to get pushed off the puck very easily, and relied solely on his speed to get to the puck first. He's now learned how to better angle the players to the boards to slow them down. Once you take away the speed, the size difference matters a lot less.
Forget about pairing up with Karlsson -- the sample size is too small. But overall when Wiercioch is on the ice the Sens percentage of shot attempts is significantly higher than all other LHS D-men on the team.
And there are teams/GMs out there who do take these stats seriously.
