Wiercioch moves the puck extremely well which is important on a team being built with speed. Moving Weircioch before Cowen IMO is a mistake. Not a game changer but a mistake none the less.

On top of that I think Boroweicki has turned into what they wanted Cowen to be which is also a factor.

Cowen's sh*t or get off the pot time was this year and while his game has improved vs last year it hasn't been good enough to call him a top 4 D man or better than Wiercioch at this point.

I have to agree. 5 months ago, I would have said no to the idea of moving Cowen, but he just doesn't seem to have the hockey IQ to be much more than a bottom pairing guy. And what OTT needs clearly is a lefty #3/4 dman.

The biggest factor for me has been how organized they have looked in their own zone. Weircioch is soft but for the most part well positioned. Cowen is probably our toughest dman to play against in our end but he's usually a play behind everyone else.
Is it just simple correlation or is Cowen out the big factor in improved d-zone play?

Glencross to the Caps from the Flames for "a couple of picks"...I'm guessing not a first rounder.

Edit: Picks are 2nd and 3rd rounders in 2015. Good add for the Caps, they are motivated. Trotz has done wonders.

Hard to answer, but id say it's six to one between Wiercioch and Cowen. Both have tremendous issues, both have intriguing upsides.

Like this player and this move. Especially if they can re-sign him.

Cowen is still young IMO. His development was halted by the injuries. I say we could wait another year on him personally before shopping him. I doubt he'll lose all value. Obviously if the right deal came along then it's another story.

My feeling now is that there's not a lot to separate Cowen, Weiercioch, and Boro, so if you can move Cowen as a key part of a deal that leads to someone like Eberle, then let's do it.

You need to find the right deal IMO.  You need to find another bobby Ryan and he's your main bait.

Him and/or the 1st I guess.  We're closing in on being good again.  Everyone can see it and feel it I think...

Yeah, to me it's Boro that's made Cowen expendable. I really mean that. That's a really nice young shutdown guy.

Oh yeah, don't trade anyone of those guys just for the sake of doing it. But if it comes down to giving Wiercioch away for nothing or using Cowen as a key piece in a bigger Ryan-esque deal, then I'm for the latter.

Wiercioch spends a lot less time in his zone, though. Struggling is one thing, but if that struggle is short it's easier to take.

They still gave up, what, 45 shots, to Montreal. I don't think taking Cowen out is the biggest reason for the turnaround, but it's one of several reasons, IMO.

- Taking out Phillips (and return of Methot)
- Injuries to Neil and Smith
- Injuries to Lehner and MacArthur (rallying point)
- Hammond's play (another rallying point)

A lot of changes have been gradual over the last few weeks. The two big ones (IMO) have been Methot/Phillips (makes Karlsson a better player) and Hammond (only last 5 games).

I'm sure The Philler barely played with Karlsson. When you add it all up.

This is the BONANZA thread not the $hit on The Philler thread.

Rumor? @NHLSourcesSay has already "Broken" it. And MacKenzie has come pretty close to confirming it (but not a done deal yet).

Who would the Rangers move out to make room?
