Poor trade.

Maybe there were some conditional picks in there?

And a phlegm to be named later.

Bob McKenzie: Senators not looking to "push anyone out the door" including Legwand, surprisingly. But Cowen gets mentioned again as a trade possibility:

Cowen for what though? Not for just the sake of trading him I assume.

His advanced stats are really quite terrible. It would seem Ceci is keeping him afloat.

I don't see it as a surprise Cowen would be traded. His money escalates next year and the Sens already have over 60 million committed to the team without new contracts for Z-Bad/Hoffman/Stone. It is also pretty clear he is not in the team's top 3.

I wonder if there's a fit with Chicago that would send Legwand and Cowen over for Sharp and Hjalmarsson. Not straight up, obviously, but around those players.

Teams are looking for D men that can play in their top 4 and are young enough to be part of their core.  IMO the gap between Wiercioch and Cowen isn't big enough to really say one is going to be better than the other (with certainty) even if Cowen has a lot of assets that could potentially make him a lot better than Wiercioch.

You don't trade Cowen for the sake of trading him, you trade him if the deal is right.  Would you trade Cowen straight up for a top 15 pick in this draft?  IMO yes.  Would you trade him as part of a package for an upgrade at center/forward?  IMO yes.  Would you trade him for a similar player you are unfamiliar with or an equal up front?  IMO no.  A late 1st rounder in any draft?  IMO no.

SSF mentioned a deal with Chicago, I see the logic but I don't think Ottawa is ready to make that deal exactly.  I'll just lay it back to ROR because I think that's Ottawa's biggest target.

I honestly don't know what to think. That would be a summer deal for the sake of both sides but with earlier reports that moving Cowen would be motivated by salary, I doubt Ottawa would make that cap saving move (for Chicago) at all.

Well, you never know. Teams might be looking at moving someone who has fallen out of favour with their organization for a D man that can help now and will into the future. I think you are right about the summer but I wouldn't be shocked to see something put together like it was for Bobby Ryan 2 years ago.

Cowen is probably the best bargaining chip the Sens have and Colorado is losing ROR along with needing some young, physical D men. There rumours about ROR are out there with the Sens and it's a very similar situation to what was going on with Bobby Ryan.

That would be great if we could land ROR.

The potential is there. Everyone knows he's available, trading Cowen in that deal is more than 1/2 the cap hit right off the hop. You might even be able to throw Legwand in to replace O'Reilly short term for the Avs and take on more of the money... Then it will come down to giving up a guy like Peumpel in that same deal and maybe an additional draft pick.

If you could go ROR for Cowen, Legwand, Peumpel/Prince, and a 2nd in 2016, I think that works for both teams both short and long term. You need to have some assurance that ROR would resign though.

If the Sens get an ROR via trade then they are well on their way to contending.

Bobby Ryan, and Ryan O'Reilly. Bobby/O'Reilly. Baba O'Riley could be their goal song.
