Lots of dead weight in the upper echelons of the non-hockey ops departments with the Sens. It'll be good to have some change.

Time to trim the fat and set aside some dough for The Alfie.

The Alfie will become CFO, CEO, President, Vice-President, GM, player-coach, and Captain. Combined salary? $37M.

No way I deal our first this year until after the lottery.

A couple months ago Hall quietly asked for a trade I have heard. I actually posted that here.

There is no way a Hall deal gets done mid season and you are right... wouldn't trade that 1st until they know where they are picking.

Absolutely no rush to make that kind of deal right now. The deals people will see are small ones with the vets on the move... Phillips, Neil, Legwand.

That's not the kind of deal that usually happens mid year anyway. Let's focus on getting Legwand a new postal code or zip and Phillips too.

Methot apparently has either the flu or a stomach virus.

Still tons of time to trade for some help before we face Dallas. Who will be gone by Thursday?

People seem to forget that Neil and Phillips both have NTCs, and Murray won't deal them unless they actually want to leave. Both have another year left on their contracts, and both are very rooted here in Ottawa with businesses and family. I don't see anyway either gets dealt this year, but if people want to keep dreaming, go ahead.

Legwand on the other hand is likely dying to go to a contender and also get out of the -25 winter, since he's used to Nashville.

If Philips wants to continue to be a healthy scratch, and I'm not saying he doesn't, then he may want to stay here as you've suggested Ev. He will only continue to see more and more of the press box as time goes on and if he wants his career to continue past next season he may decide to try a new location. He can keep his routes here in Ottawa and revive his playing career elsewhere.

I'm not saying it happens but, it's not as cut and dried as you may think.

I think you underestimate just how much it might hurt the player (feelings and pride) when a team says "we don't really want you and we are going in another direction". I also don't think they just want to wither away watching from the pressbox (Phillips in this case) when they believe they have more in the tank.

Phillips will waive for sure if he wants to keep playing and if he doesn't want to waive then he should retire because the writing on the wall in Ottawa couldn't be more clear.

Niel is an interesting case though... still has game left, plays hard, good character guy, but how much time does he have left in the NHL and an Ottawa uniform? If he gave a list of 10 teams he wanted to go to I would be willing to bet all 10 would give a 2nd round pick for him, minimum a 3rd and 5th.

Legwand you can probably send packing to Nashville as they may need the depth if they really want to make a run at the Cup this year and they truly do have a chance. If you can get any kind of draft pick for him then great. I would think a 6th or 7th is completely worth it to clear the books of that contract and the roster spot for the remainder of the season.

That's a little north of 7 mil off the books right now and into next year along with gaining some picks in this years or next years draft... to me perhaps they should be taking next years picks and having those in their back pockets in case they want to add next year around this time.

Clearing those roster spots will allow this kids to play and Smith and Greening to hang around without forcing guys down to the AHL or the stands. The bigger deals are usually made in the off season.

Yah I just said something similar... if the guy wants to sit in the press box in Ottawa fine but if that's the case and the motivation to win and play hockey is that little, just retire.

I could definitely see Philips going to Boston, if they wanted him. There's a lot of familiar faces there.

Boston has no cap space, and already has 6 defenders better than Phillips...not sure that's the landing spot.

Plus, don't forget Phillips has another year on his contract, and Boston has a lot of decisions to make next season...not sure he'd fit in there.
