Thing is, looking at the UFA centers that were signed in the off-season, if you ignore the high end guys (e.g. Stastny) who would never have signed here anyway, Legwand really was the best of the bunch. It's quite sad.

Forget about wingers, we need better production from our centers. And Lazar, even if he improves post-WJC, is not going to cut it. We need more from Zibanejad and Turris or we need someone else.

Wow, did not know this:

KHL's website pays a backhanded compliment to #Sens scouts, saying that there are more Ottawa draftees in the KHL than any other NHL team's.

And that does not include Filatov since he wasn't drafted by Ottawa.

Not sure we can really use the stats under Cameron yet...not very many games played yet...as the cool kids like to say, "sample size".  That said, they seem to be playing a little better overall.

It will come down to the development of individuals and the system overall. You want to show progress through the year right now even if the wins are not there. Losing out on the playoffs this year is not the worst thing in the world and IMO would probably be a better long term benefit with A) a better draft pick in a deep draft and B) a full off season for the younger guys to catch their breath again.

wprager wrote:Some more interesting numbers.  I took a look at the stats of the Sens centers to compare last year to this year.  For last season they had Conacher and Grant listed as centers but I ignored their stats and went with just Spezza/Turris/Zibanejad/Smith/DaCosta/Pageau.

Goals per game went from 0.44 to 0.15 -- almost a 3x drop.  Points per game went from 0.86 to 0.39 -- more than a 2x drop.  Surely, though, with the improved goaltending the +/- will be better, right?  Especially with Spezza gone.  This year the centers are accumulating minuses at the rate of -0.12 per game, as compared to last year's 0.10 pace.

Way less offense down the middle.  Scary bad.  And the +/- is actually slightly worse, despite much better goalie performance.

Remember before this year started we said the season would hinge on Cowen and Zibanejad having bouncback years? Well...one of them did...

Muckler thinking he could find a Datsyuk... It is painful to look at.

I still don't think the playoffs are out of the question.  The rest of January, we have Colorado, Phoenix x2, Dallas x2, Toronto, The Rags, Carolina, and Montreal.  That's 9 games...I think we can go 7-2, which should get us pretty close to that last wild card spot.

The schedule in Feb is pretty soft too, with the exception of the western road trip at the very end of that month.

Make it so.

Gotta win one before they win 7.

According to Pierre LeBrun, the Senators are looking to add some offence for the purpose of making the playoffs.

more to come

Jesus I hope not... if they are making a move it better be for the long term well being of the Ottawa Senators, not the short term "need" to make the playoffs. That being said if the Sens do make the playoffs they will be red hot heading in and if they play Tampa or Montreal they have a fair chance.

Was JOB a Murray pick? He was in the KHL until last week or so.

12 games. Most people wanted to evaluate after 10 (and, yes, again after 20).

Zibanejad had nothing to bounce back from.

I think we could all agree that it's kind of silly to evaluate a coach after 12 games.  Especially when he doesn't have a ton to work with.  As my hero Brock Lesnar once said, "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken Dung".
