How does Forsberg factor into the return being disasterous?  The return would be disasterous because all the pieces we would want - ie Josi, Hornqvist...and whatever else they have...would likely be 'off limits'.

Diddle it.

If they trade Forsberg for Erat, tells you exactly what kind of prospect he is, i.e. not that good.

I think Washington thought they would get a little more out of Erat, lets be honest.  That said they traded Forsberg pretty quickly and he wasn't all that great in his first stint in the NHL but he's also playing in a Nashville system.

He's not great but I don't think he's all that bad either, Nashville just has better prospects IMO two of whom are Jarnkrok and Salomaki.

Be careful. This is what we said about Stewart.

To be clear, I didn't say jack Dung about Stewart. I never said once that I wanted him or that I thought he was coming here. That was all you jack-a-ninnys.

I also never said Briere was coming here, and I also never said that Spezza was being traded to Colorado...all things other people promised here.

Yeah, no one said you specifically. More so a general statement that the group as a collective got behind. The Stewart trade anyway.

This is breaking my brain. They didn't trade Forsberg for Erat. They traded Erat for Forsberg. That tells us that they like Forsberg at least more than they like Erat, who was certainly under performing, but has been a 50 point guy for some time.

If the Sens traded an under performing 50 point guy, like, say, 9MM, that would tell you that the Sens think Forsberg has more value than 9MM. Right?

I'm fairly certain that REDACTED promised Briere was going to the Sens.

Or does it tell you about how dumb the Washington organization is?

Yeah, I'm just giving examples as to why it can be silly to get so set on one certain scenario playing out. Fact it, there's 20 teams Spezza can be traded to, and he'll go to the one that gives us the "best" package in return.

Well 19 but who's counting?

If Spezza is going to be in high demand then that is nothing but good.

The singular best thing that can happen is that we allow the team to negotiate an extension with him and that he wants to sign it with whatever team is stepping up. Then you're looking at maximum return.

Exactly. So the real question is what's Spezza's value?
- 30+ years old
- Chronic back injury
- Terrible plus/minus
- Poor defensive player
- Two back-to-back years of poor production (lockout + this season except for the end)
- One year left on his contract
- Elite player?
- Team Leader?

I don't think it's fair to compare the Spezza trade to the Ryan trade. I think at most you're getting a solid roster player and a high-end prospect in return. That is unless there really is a large market and you start a bidding war.

If Friedman is stating that Spezza will be traded prior to the draft then for all we know they already have a trade in place.

Or they can let the interested teams talk to him about the potential of re-signing. They're allowed to do that under the new CBA. That might be enough to maximize the return.

It's easy to undervalue any player when you only list negatives.

Totally agree. It sounds like they will handle this situation in a much more professional manner than the Alfie situation.
