Murray doesn't have the balls to trade Spezza.  He didn't have it before and he doesn't now.  I am sure there were plenty of concerns about his game in Murray's office over the years.

He traded Fisher and Kelly because the team needed to dump salary, not because they were at fault with how the team fell apart that year.

It's anecodal but most Sens fans I meet either hate or aren't big on Spezza at all.  I have yet to meet a Spezza "fan" in this city in person.  I don't think I recall his jersey around town much if at all.

Exactly and the fact is he is never around the city, the charities, or the people unless they are hammered at a bar. Alfie had the Royal, Fisher had CHEO, even Karlsson has the Boys and Girls club, and there is a bunch of others that are involved in a lot of other charities. Where has Spezza been the last 10 years? I have never once ever felt he wanted to be part of Ottawa as a city, it's just a place where he plays and can be the captain. Say what you want but off ice counts as well.

I thought I heard that the gladiator wasn't the original plan, someone very senior stepped in and made the change at the last minute.

The guys on the radio seemed to imply it was Roy Mlakar but this was a while ago so I might have this wrong.

Agree with everything you said here.

When they gave Spezza the captaincy my initial though was he's either going to thrive and be our captain for a while -or- they give him a 1-2 year window up until his UFA year, see how he responds to the pressure, and trade him if things don't work out. Clearly things are not working out and his value is much higher this year than it would be next year. I'd hate for Ottawa to extend him for another 3-5 years at $6-7M per and for him to wear the 'C', especially given his injury history and his inability to be a leader. It discourages me as a fan to support the team if they extend him.

The problem is who wants Spezza? I would expect a roster player and a pick for him at a minimum. Maybe his value is similar to what we gave up for Ryan? Only thing working in our favour is the fact that the cap is going up so paying him $6-7M per isn't the worst thing in the world. Does he have a no trade clause?

Potential trade partners:
- Carolina Hurricanes (Skinner, Gleason)
- New York Rangers (1st, Del Zotto, Hagelin)
- Nashville Predators (1st, Josi, Forsberg)
- Philadelphia Flyers (1st, Couturier, Coburn)
- New Jersey (1st, Henrique, Gelinas)
- Washington (1st, Laich, Alzner)
- Winnipeg (1st, Kane/Little)

I think you have to also look at getting max value out of Anderson, Michalek, and Conacher. Michalek is a good add at the trade deadline. Probably worth a 2nd rd pick at most. Anderson and Conacher if packaged together can probably get an established top-four defenceman and a mid-level prospect. Maybe sweeten the pot and try to land Markstrom and Gudbranson out of Florida.

Meh, a lot of teams would want Spezza but his time in Ottawa is close to over or at least it should be. He's not the player yu can build around and the team is more or less still building towards something. Spezza on a team where he can be insulated and has other leaders he could be golden.

Before I ever heard of Alfie's involvement with the General my kids were in on the Spelling with Spezza program, trying to read enough books to get him to visit their school. He's involved with the Ronald McDonald house (for CHEO).

Apparently he is also very charitable with his ****. But those are just rumours.
