Maybe I am wrong but I got the impression that most (if not all) the councilors got feedback that the majority of people don't want a casino in this city at all(CLL is fine) and if we must have a casino then just expand RCR.

If Watson & co. got a flood of letters and phone calls demanding a casino at CTC or at least an open bidding process then I am sure they would do so if they want any chance at re-election.

The City won't fund the new arena.  If Euge gets his Casino (if OLG opens an RFP for more parties than the ridiculous one from the City) then maybe he can build his new arena... If not... he won't have the $$ to build the arena himself.. and he certainly won't get anything from the Prov...

An arena life in the NHL is supposed to be something like 30 yrs..  CTC is now at 20 yrs..
First of all, the CTC is still a teenager (opened in 1996). Second, the new arenas starting popping up all over the NHL right around the late '90s, although there are some older. For example, the Saddledome opened in 1983. For most of the modern arenas we don't yet have the data to know how long they will last. The Saddledome is 30 years old and just went through a flood that had it underwater to row 10 or higher, but they have no intention on gutting it and rebuilding. Most others were built in the last 20 years, with better materials/equipment/processes.

Rexall place opened in 1974 and they are replacing it in the next few years. Maybe that's where the 30-year thing came from? Thing is, are they replacing it because of age or size (under 17,000)?

MSG was built in '68 and is, currently, the oldest. They did major renovation not too long ago, though.

The Forum in Montreal opened in 1924 and cost $20M (in today's dollars); damned unions Dammit!  It closed in 1996, but the biggest reason for the new arena was not that the old one was 72 years old, but that there was no way to increase capacity beyond just under 18,000 (and that's including 1,600 standing room).

The CTC is in great shape. I don't see any major renovations that need to be done. Not sure about things like the Zamboni, or the ice making plant, but the building itself is solid.

You kidding? He's a liberal.

Yeah, I would say they can get much more life out of CTC than just 30 years. 50 seems more likely.

Also, they were putting the new CTC lettering up on the building yesterday when I was driving home from work.

How does his political orientation change things? He's a politician, hence he will want to be re-elected and say-and-do pretty much what it takes to get re-elected.

An Ontario liberal? They don't get voted out in Ontario especially in the South End of Ottawa, lol. Doesn't matter what they do, legal, illegal, morally disgusting, w/e.

Exactly. I would have used Pembroke as that example but same difference.

Ironic how Lowell Green used to refer to those from Kanata as granola-crunching, cappucino-sipping, pointy-headed, bleeding-heart Liberals. Maybe they were, in the '70s (when it was only Beaverbrook).

I'm 30 and I feel the same way about light rail.
Well I'm just over 60 -- so I probably will not see the completion of light rail...

You'll see lots of bike paths and foot bridges, though! Cheers

Maybe in the beginning.. but I don't think that is true now.

Watson needs a Casino at RCR so it can fund the harness racing and save that site along with the farmers whose livelihood depends on that being still around.

As I have mentioned before... since March 2013 the slots can't provide financing to the harness racing... only a Casino.

That's why the rush to get the tables in the designate RCR as a Casino...

Until then your guess is as good as mine as to where the funds are coming from to keep the harness racing going. I have a pretty good idea... and I don't think Watson would ever want to say so publically..

Must be a week since we've heard anything Melnyk-related from Yost. He's been rehabilitated?
