Can't see how Cowen's gonna get too much of a raise unless they sign him to a 7 year deal - and even then, I don't really see the point of doing that yet.  2 years, 1.5 per year is the highest I'd go, or 7 years, 3.8, but again, I see zero reason to do that right now.

I doubt they will give him a Hamonic type contract considering the injuries he has had.

You never know. Murray is not a short-sighted GM, if he thinks this is the best deal we'll get, he'll do it - but again, I agree, I can't see it happening.

Murray said he likes Jagr? Huh...didn't see him going there personally.

I think the point is that Melnyk's financial problems are stopping our team from improving and also probably lead to Alfie leaving.

New owner please.

We don't know if he is really having problems and how bad.

The "budget" may be what the team is willing to spend based on the money that comes in.  Remember that our ticket prices are below NHL average and we don't have any mega TV deals or anything.  We spent to the cap before but the cap was lower.

We know that if the team spends to the cap they take a loss unless they go far into the playoffs, Eugene may be UNABLE or UNWILLING to take that loss.  We don't know.

He doesn't necessarily have to sell the team either just find additional partners, or generate additional revenue like a casino *cough*.

If the cap keeps going up you will see more and more teams on budgets. I really doubt the Sens can increase revenues at the same rate that the NHL is going at.

Can we at least talk about the broken Zamboni, then?

They have a budget. They have said this many many times. What's your point?

Every team has a budget.

Also there is no guarantee that Jagr makes this team better. We got into the post-season with bubblegum and popsicle sticks. We needed help in the second round. If Jagr plays a full season I am not convinced he would be effective in the playoffs (remember last year was a shortened season). I'd prefer to wait until the deadline to see who is available then.

I believe it has been reported that the budget is keeping the Zamboni in a state of disrepair as well.

One Zamboni has no problem doing the ice during intermission. Save on gas and the salary of one Zamboni driver (the ZDU are surprisingly strong and have a ton of influence, so drivers get paid huge $$$). With only one Zamboni it will take more time to resurface the ice, leaving less time for the intermission stupid-human-tricks, which will significantly improve the in-game experience. Hell, it might even make up for the 45 minute drive to the 417.

The real issue is that the cap is tied to league revenue. Get ready for another lockout.

There is no problem with that if revenue sharing is sufficient. I don't think it is, but it will be much better than it was in the old CBA.

One zamboni it is!!!

Honestly, it can't cost more the a repair guy or at worst a machinist shop to fix a zamboni. Fake reports.

Melnyk said he doesn't have financial issues but he needs more money. Sounds like a financial issue.

Per CFRA (Alison Sandor):
---
#Melnyk says he has no financial issues, but need to create other revenue sources. Ticket $ low, but something is going to have to give

He is using the team as leverage.

Like I said in other threads if the cap goes up, they need to raise ticket prices to keep up, where are they supposed to find the money to spend to an ever increasing cap? There are limits before the team takes losses.

Is Eugene just supposed to bleed money every year and spend to the cap because the fans say so but they are unable or unwilling to pay more than below NHL average ticket prices?

I would like an owner that is an insanely rich trillionaire who is a big hockey fan who just wants to win, and doesn't mind losing some money each year on the team.

You don't get rich by owning an NHL team, you own an NHL team because you're rich.

With a young team on the way I think they could bump the prices a little without much a lash back from fans. Fact is the Sens real established fans from the time they were kids to the present now have money and good sources of income so I would bet they are willing to spend. Winning cures everything and they are headed down that path.

The Senators are a poorly run business, whose success on the ice is only thanks to a really good GM making the best of a bad situation.

I hope you leave too, so you can then realize that Ottawa is actually a pretty sweet city to live in, all things considered. The grass is NOT greener.
